Cover Letter for Resume
What is it that makes our head and our hands just stop when it comes to writing a resume cover letter?
In the back of your mind you know that this little piece of paper makes all the difference to you getting the job you want, or being pushed to the bottom of the barrel (again).
It doesn't matter how many times we sit down and start the cover letter, we always stop (75% of people) after the first paragraph, have a quick read, delete it or rip it up and start all over again.
How should you promote / sell yourself? If you come on too strong, the employer may think you are just a show off. If you stay in the laid back, reserved corner, you may come across as lazy or shy.
Neither of the above attributes are what your future boss is looking for, most of the time an employer does not know what they are looking for. Sure they know exactly what the job entails and which department you'll be working in, they may even have a grasp of the software requirements you will need. But they have not got a clue about the person they are looking for.
This is the one and only reason for the resume cover letter. But what's wrong with this letter?
You have less than 30 seconds to convince the reader that you are the perfect candidate for the advertised position, 30 seconds, that may not seem like a long time but try holding your breath for that long, it will seem quite q while then, and if you are sat across from an interviewer while they read your resume cover letter it will seem even longer.
Where would you start a cover letter for resume?
Dear Sir, thank you for taking the time to read this - another one hits the rim of the trash can and lands noisily. How about, I am perfect for the position within your company because…if you haven't done your homework on their company, your letter just joined the first one, in the trash.
It's a well known fact that everyone needs a CV, it's also a well known fact that people who have a current CV didn't just knock it up in the last 10 minutes before walking into their interview, no, they started that resume when they landed their first position within the workplace.
A cover letter changes with time and experience, a CV is about history, a cover letter for a resume is about YOU, NOW.
