John Falter Cover Artist For the Post Magazine

John Philip Falter, an artist from Nebraska, is best known for his 25 year relationship with the magazine The Saturday Evening Post. Falter produced over 120 covers for the popular magazine starting in 1943 with his rendition of Benjamin Franklin. His attention to detail and his depiction of Americana makes his covers a delight to look at and collect.

John Falter also did many advertisements for companies like Gulf Oil, Pall Mall cigarettes, Four Roses Whiskey, and Arrow shirts.

I have created this lens to share some of Falter's remarkable magazine cover art with you. The image attached to this paragraph is Falter's Cover Art for the March 27, 1948 issue of the Saturday Evening Post.

American Life in the Falter Style

Just as good as any Norman Rockwell covers, John Falter captured American Life with his Americana style. His covers show great attention to detail depicting activities that we Americans enjoyed in a simpler time.

This image is the cover of the October 23, 1954 issue of the Saturday Evening Post magazine. You can almost hear this young band playing some popular song of the day. Each teen intent on playing his or her part just right.

Falter Trivia:

John Falter studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League of New York.

Preparing for Spring

This magazine cover was done by John Falter for the March 26, 1949 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. Notice the incredible detail of the house and all of it's features.

Falter's March 29, 1947 Cover Art

In this cover for the Saturday Evening Post, Falter has a city scene on a rainy day. One brave woman decides she isn't going to wait for a taxi. She'll just cover her head and walk to where ever her destination is.

Notice all of the activity going on in the background. Men and a few women huddle under the long awning trying to stay dry.

The cover ran for the March 29, 1947 issue.

Advertising Accounts:

Falter did advertisements for Gulf Oil, Four Roses Whiskey, Arrow Shirts, and Pall Mall Cigarettes.

U.S. Brewers Foundation Ad from 1953

John Falter also did magazine ads

Falter was also hired by many companies to do advertising for their products. He was one of the many artists hired by the U. S. Brewers Foundation to do a series of advertising called Home Life in America.

This advertisement was number 86 in the series and was removed from a 1953 issue of Life magazine.

I love the detail in this ad. Couples gathered on a patio to enjoy hot dogs, beer, and the World Series. Look at that old television set!

I love all of his work, but my favorite is The Saturday Evening Post dated 12/61 "Foxhunters". The farm in the back ground is where my mother lived with her parents for many years when she was young. It is in PA. I just bought this issue on ebay.

These all seem so familiar and I know I have admired them in the past but did not know who the artist was. John Falter's Magazine Covers are really very special.

I am looking for a cover done in 1947-1953 for Saturday Evening Post of the last Patent Medicine Store located in Saugatuck, CT. It's of the marble counter area w/the counter man doling out ice cream.

I don't find any John Falter covers matching that description from 1947 through 1953. There is one for Oct 11, 1947 of a counter by Alajalov, one done for July 15, 1950 also done by Alajalov but I don't think that is the one you are talking about. Amos Sewell did on for Aug 16, 1952 that might be it. Norman Rockwell did one for Aug 22, 1953 that seems a little close. Maybe it is one of these.

Great work done in building this lens Bev. They say that a picture speaks 1,000 words, but his really do tell a story. Like with the 1947 shot - I love the activity and the woman walking a way. I think his work is a prime example of imagery being active. Thanks for the introduction :).

You know I'm just thinking that this would look great on a Vintage style of template -- like a Sepia -- should request one of those! ;)
