Cover Letter Template

A cover letter template is a great starting point when you are about to write a job application cover letter. Ok, but what is a cover letter, you might ask? A cover letter, or job application letter, is a brief, one-page letter that you enclose along with your resume when you apply for a job. In this letter you are supposed to introduce yourself a bit and describe why you are perfect for the job. A good cover letter can be the difference between being selected to come to a job interview or having your job application dumped in the trash along with your expectations for the position. Now, I'm not saying the resume is unimportant, it is of course essential that your resume meets the qualifications required for the current job, but it's hard and not recommended to do anything super creative and special with your resume, which should be a clean and formal description of your experiences. Therefore it's up to the cover letter to really catch your potential employer's attention, and here is an opportunity for you to be personal and make a great first impression to your (hopefully) next employer.

Start With A Template

So, what to do if you don't know how to write an amazing cover letter, or haven't had any success with your previous ones and are out of ideas? What should the letter look like, what should be included and what should be left out? One way to get started is to begin with a pre-written cover letter template and replace the template text with actual text. It's an easy, "fill-in-the-blanks" approach that ensures good cover letters. It's so much easier to start with a real sample and then modify it, than having to start from scratch. I have included such a cover letter sample below to assist anyone who would like some ideas for writing their own letter. This template is what I use when starting to write a new job cover letter and I have had great success with it!

Dear Mr./Ms. Smith,

[first paragraph]
The opening paragraph should announce the purpose of your correspondence and the specific job being sought. Mention the ad to which you are responding (it is important to be specific here).

[middle paragraphs]
  • Highlight one or two of your best accomplishments.

  • Call attention to the specific items that qualify you for this position.

  • Inform the employer that you meet the minimum requirements for the position (i.e. if the ad says that applicants must have a certain level of education, be sure to indicate that you possess this degree/certificate).

  • Show in more detail how your qualifications and experience correspond to what the employer wants in this particular job.

  • State why you see this position as a good opportunity for you.

  • Remain brief and focused.

[final paragraph]
Here, in your closing words, you should thank the employer for reading your application, and you should express interest in meeting the employer for an interview.

Salutation:
Sincerely / Yours truly / Sincerely yours,

Your signature
Your name (in type) should appear beneath your signature

Closing Thoughts

Hopefully you have now gotten an idea of how you should write your next employment cover letter. One last tip is to not be afraid to stand out a bit by using a unique layout, write on a certain type of paper etc. There are lots of small things you could do to make your cover letter stand out among hundreds of others, but still maintain a professional and formal look. All ideas are good except the bad! Good luck with your job hunting and hope you found my cover letter template useful!
