Whether your library is in a small, rural area or a big city, cows are one animal all the kids will know. (Plus they make a funny sound.) Many children will know meat comes from cows, but do they know about milk, butter, cheese and ice cream? This works as a great lead in before storytime begins.

The Cow Who Clucked
by Denise Fleming
When Cow wakes up one morning to find she's lost her moo, she sets off to find it. She meets several animal friends including mice, snakes, ducks and pigs. They all have their own sounds, but none have her moo.

Sung to the tune of Skip to My Lou, there are cows in the kitchen, pigs in the pantry, sheep on the sofa... and Tom Farmer's fast asleep!
Raising Readers: More activities to use with Cows in the KitchenCowlick!
by Christin Ditchfield
While three little boys and their dog sleep at night, a cow quietly sneaks into their room and bestows a giant cow kiss. The boys and their dog wake the next morning to fancy hairstyles (cowlicks) that refuse to be tamed.
When telling this story with puppets, I tell it with only one child and no dog. A piece of fun fur from the craft store and backed with velcro can easily be attached to a puppet's hairline when he starts to get up.
The unexpected hairstyle on a favorite puppet and and the long, sloppy cow kiss always results in a lot of laughter from the audience.
The Doghouse
by Jan Thomas
When playing outside with her friends, Mouse's ball accidentally rolls into the doghouse. She's too scared to go after it so one by one, she sends her friends in to retrieve it. But none of them come out either, so Mouse must be very brave and go in, too.
If acting out this story, beware of flying balls! The first time I performed this book for storyitme, a coworker accidentally knocked me in the face with Mouse's ball, and I ended up with a black eye! Who knew storytime could be so dangerous?

CHORUS:
We're on our way, we're on our way,
On the way to Grandpa's farm
We're on our way, we're on our way,
On the way to Grandpa's farm
Down on Grandpa's farm there is a great, big brown cow.

Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
Cow Puppets
Little Boy Blue
Traditional Rhyme
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn.
But where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under a haycock, fast asleep.
Mrs. Wishy Washy
by Joy Cowley
Cow, Pig, and Duck are having a lovely time playing in the mud, but Mrs. Wishy Washy has other ideas. One by one, she gives them a bath. But as soon as she walks away, they hop back in the mud again.

Traditional Song
Late one night when we were all in bed
Old Mrs. O'Leary took a lantern to the shed,
And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said,
"It'll be a hot time in the old town tonight.
FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!"
Wake Up You Sleepyheads
Traditional Song
Wake up you sleepyheads and
Go and get the cattle,
Wake up you sleepyheads and
Go and get the cows.
The cows are lost.
The sun is warm.
I think I'll rest,
Til they come home.
(SNORE)
WAKE UP YOU SLEEPYHEADS!

- Keep these coming. I would have loved these suggestions back in my children's librarian days. Sometimes it was a scramble to put together a theme for the next week's storytime.
