Matching Your Furnishings With A Cowhide Rug

Cowhide rugs come in an incredibly diverse range of effects and finishing's. From basic cured hide, through dyed effects, some of which will be designed to look like another animal pelt such as a zebra or a leopard, to bright primary colors. Finishing is also fairly varied, from raw edge to round leather stitched Native American style. Due to this diversity, it is difficult to approach the subject of melding a cowhide rug with you furnishings, as the options are myriad.

Leaving the newer, more radical designs of cowhide rug aside, if we take the traditional cowhide rug, or one that has been made up of a patchwork of hides, which is the type most people will be familiar with, the problem becomes simpler. If we think old west, then it becomes simpler still. So we are predominantly going to be thinking about giving our living space a smattering of old west style furniture and fittings, to facilitate the inclusion of a cowhide rug.

Timber Home Setting

Natural pine is a fantastic choice for anybody wishing to keep their room furnishings in tune with their cowhide rug. Many stores and suppliers can provide very authentic western looking furniture in this charming wood, which manages to look striking but not coarse.

In effect, any type of wooden furniture, which is left roughly finished, would work fairly well with a cowhide rug, keeping in mind that we are trying to match things in both tone and style terms. Even a room that has been decorated in a contemporary fashion can lend itself to housing a cowhide rug as long as an effort is made to introduce a compatible theme. Depending upon the room in question, this can be as simple as adding small features such as a log display, unfinished or stressed wood shelving and maybe some other cowhide accoutrements such as lampshades or wall hangings.

Period Furnishings With Cowhide

Introducing a cowhide rug into a period room poses a real challenge, but it is not impossible. One way to accomplish a synergy between these two heavily conflicting styles of decor would to be to create a localized theme in the room. For example, a drawing room may have an area that has some comfortable seating and a low table; this area could be re-designed to accept the cowhide rug, whilst maintaining the overall theme of decor within the rest of the living space.

Fireplace Focus

Possibly the nicest way to bring a cowhide rug into play within an already decorated room, is to make it a feature of the fireplace, and theme the fireplace around it. What could be more pleasant on a cold night than lying stretched on your cowhide rug in front of a roaring fire? The mantle piece and fire surround would carry small items that reflected the style of the rug, and in this situation we will have created a very localized and decorative environment within the large space of the room.
