A few Coyote Calling Tips I've learned over the past 20 years of hunting.

You're going to learn the best Coyote Calling Tips I have to teach you from the knowledge I've gained over the past 20 years I've spent hunting the wily coyote.

Let me start by telling you if you are a beginner that Coyote Calling is a lot of fun! Every time I go I have a blast and learn something new about the critters.

There are lot's of ways to hunt coyotes. I'm going to give you tips on what I believe to be the most fun and the most sportsman like way to hunt coyotes...CALLING THEM TO YOU.

Coyote Calling Tip #1.

You will need to do a little scouting to find some areas where coyotes are actually frequenting. These areas will include timber, ditches, grassy areas, water holes, and basically locations where there is a good amount of cover. In these areas you will be looking for coyote tracks, both old and new, coyote dens, and coyote skat (droppings).

Coyote Calling Tip #2.

Always set up to call downwind (wind in your face or crossing) of where you expect the coyote to come from (timber, ditch, grassy area, etc) Coyotes have an exceptional sense of smell so you don't want them to get wind of you. Coyotes will almost always try to get down wind of where the sound of your call is coming from. Be aware of this and always watch your down wind side.

Coyote Calling Tip # 3.

Always wear camo clothing that blends in with the season. In other words if it is fall and trees, grass, etc. are starting to brown, I would recommend brown and green camo. If it is winter and there is snow on the ground I would recommend white camo. Just be sure you blend in as well as possible with your surroundings. Coyotes have very good eye sight so anything you can do to not be detected is highly recommended.

Coyote Calling Tip #4.

Hunt with a partner when ever possible. I seldom hunt alone. One reason is safety. The main reason though is being able to see the whole area you are hunting. It can be very hard for one person to scan the entire area by yourself without a lot of movement. The less you move the better.

Coyote Calling Tip #5.

Choose the right call for your area. I live in Missouri where a large part of the coyote's diet is cotton tail rabbit and field mice. So I mainly use a cotton tail rabbit distress call and a mouse squeaker. The key for you will be to determine what the coyotes in your area dine on and use the proper call. Maybe you live in the west where jack rabbits are more prevalent than cotton tail rabbits. So in your case you would want to use a jackrabbit distress call which is a lot raspier tone than a cotton tail.

Coyote Calling Tip #6.

Electronic Call vs Mouth Call. I use both, but I prefer mouth calls. The reason is I can control both the volume and frequency of calling easier. When I first get to the area I'm going to call from I settle in and wait just a few minutes to begin calling. When I do begin to call I call at a relatively low volume to begin with in case there is a coyote or bobcat close by. Then after a couple times of calling no critters appear, I'll begin calling louder and louder. If I'm only calling for coyotes in an area, I'll generally call for about 15 minutes and then move on if nothing shows. Now if I think there may be a bobcat in the area I'll call for about 30 minutes because bobcats are a little slower to come to the call as a general rule.

Where I come from, scouting is not needed because coyotes are everywhere and usually more than you think. The best way to scout (easiest) is to do some calling, although even if they do not come in does not mean they are around. I will agree varmint calling is a lot of fun. I prefer mouth calls as well, but around here, in Idaho, electronic varmint callers are much more effective. www.bestforhunting.com
