Curl Up with a Cozy Mystery

I'm a big fan of mystery novels and often I prefer them to be complex and puzzling -- challenging to the brain. However, there are time when I'm looking for a lighter, and lighter-hearted, read. On vacation, for example, or at the beach, what I generally prefer are mysteries minus the gore. I look for likeable characters, a story with just enough of a puzzle to keep my attention but not so much that I have to struggle with it. I like some humor, maybe a little romance thrown in. Cozy mysteries exactly fulfill my requirements.

While adhering to many of the conventions of the early cozy mysteries (such as Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series), modern cozies are less limited as to settings and bring in a wider variety of subject matter. A bigger change, though, is the concept of themed stories (and, in fact, entire series). One can find entire series in which each plot is built around a specific interest, such as coffee, tea, or wine lore; crafts (knitting, embroidery, glassblowing); and the arts (dance, music, art, books). Most of these themed cozy mysteries include special non-fiction features such as recipes, cooking tips, and do-it-yourself projects.

Featured in this lens are five of my favorite modern cozy mystery series. They cover five different thematic areas and are by five different authors. Each series has several books, although just one for each series is listed. In addition, I've gathered representative books for 5 additional cozy mystery series (tattoos, witchcraft, and more) that intrigue me. I haven't read these yet, but they are on my list now.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder

Hannah Swenson Mystery

A number of writers have chosen desserts as the thematic link for their cozy mysteries. I've tried books by several authors. In my opinion, Joanne Fluke's are some of the best. Set in a small Minnesota town, the stories center around cookie-shop owner Hannah Swenson. Intertwined with murders that somehow are linked to delicious desserts, the books include recipes for many of the sweet treats mentioned in the course of the story. The recipes are tempting, the characters engaging, and the mysterie.s leavened with humor. Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder is the first book in a tasty series that now includes 20 titles. I recommend starting with the first book because even though mysteries are resolved in each book, the relationships and life stories grow and change with subsequent adventures.

This series of mysteries makes great beach reading and also becomes a kind of serialized cookbook. The desserts are tempting and the recipe instructions are clear and easy to follow.

On What Grounds

A Coffeehouse Mystery

In this series, Cleo Coyle brews up a frothy blend of murder, romance, and coffee lore in her series of mysteries about barista Clare Cosi who runs a historic coffee shop in New York's Greenwich Village. Clare is already plenty busy running the coffeehouse, fending off her sexy ex, adjusting to life as the parent of a twenty-something daughter, and mentoring her gaggle of colorful employees. Nevertheless, she finds time -- and discovers in herself an unsuspected talent -- for solving mysteries. An immediate attraction to the investigating detective tops off her already full cup, but Clare is up to all the challenges. Humor and a bunch of quirky characters make the blend even more flavorful.

The Coffeehouse Mysteries series, of which On What Grounds is the first, offers a plethora of detail about the coffee business, education about blends and brewing, and recipes for delicious coffee drinks and the foods that are served with them.

Great coffee recipes and brewing tips blend with interesting plots and well-drawn characters in this cozy mystery series.

Murder by the Glass

Wine Lovers Mystery

This series of wine lovers mysteries features sleuth Nikki Sands -- former television actress and new manager of the Malveaux Winery in California's Napa Valley. Author Michele Scott has a way with quirky characters and a humorous writing style that's very entertaining. I love her descriptions of and details about the winemaking process, and I love the romances also. Interspersed between chapters are delicious recipes and wine pairings. I didn't know much about wine when I started this series; I know more now and am eager to learn more. A fun series, now up to six books. Featured here is book #2 of the series; #1 (Murder Uncorked currently is not in print but is available in a Kindle version.

Death by Inferior Design

Domestic Bliss Mystery

Feisty designer Erin Gilbert finds herself competing with attractive but annoying Steve Sullivan (Gilbert and Sullivan... get it?) for a strange decorating job that turns deadly and that turns out to have some unexpectedly personal implications. The two opponents team up, of course, to bring a neat resolution to a messy situation. Interspersed with the sleuthing are useful design/decorating tips and how-tos for even novice do-it-yourselfers.

This is the first book in the Leslie Caine's Domestic Bliss mystery series, which is now up to 7 books.

Great decorating tips, an engrossing mystery, and very likeable main characters (and some enjoyable-to-hate "bad guys."

Catering to Nobody

Goldy Culinary

I think Diane Mott Davidson is the first modern cozy author I read and her books hooked me immediately. The stories center around Goldy Schulz (Korman, at the beginning of the series). After divorcing her horrible, abusive husband, Goldy opens Goldilocks Catering to support herself and son Arch (11-yers-old when the story begins). Due to the various circumstances that arise in the course of her catering jobs, Goldy ends up as a very competent amateur crime solver. In addition to the central crime and the ongoing personal storylines, which are pretty robust, each book features a complete catering menu, with recipes interspersed among the chapters.

The characters in these books are well drawn and the insights into the catering business are both interesting and entertaining. The writing is lively and full of humor. The series is now up to 15 books and as delightful now as ever.

I am definitely a fan of the cozy mystery, but also enjoy other other genres. Cozies are just so comfortable to read that I have to shake it up every once in a while by reading something with a little more edge. I'm always looking for new series authors and saw several here to try. Thanks!

Looks like there are a lot of us who enjoy a "cozy mystery". You have mentioned several authors that I have not read and should try. Thanks for the suggestions. I have my own "Cozy Mystery List" page, too. Perhaps you could check it out and that way I can return the favor.

I made my summer reading lens on a cozy mystery series too. Or a sort of variation of a cozy.
My fave cozy mystery writer is Nancy Mehl. She has several different series, all in different locations.
Love your lens. Lots of good reading choices here.

Nice collection! I'm not a huge cozy fan, but a friend is. We rate books by whether they're SFM (safe for Mary) or NSFM (not safe for Mary).

A rating would be appreciated

Thanks!

You'll never again have to wait to read the next book in a series. With the Kindle, downloading sequels takes just a minute -- how great is that! And you won't have to worry about unavailable print editions to leave holes in your series collection. Have them all in one place, ready whenever you want them.
