Since there are many different church planting models, from very simple house churches to the complex (and expensive) high-yield approach, a number of organizations offer training to those who believe God has called them to a church planting ministry. Some of these training events are intensive, boot-camp-style programs, while others may offer a completely different schedule, such as the regional training events with the Florida Baptist Convention (SBC) that meet every Monday for twelve weeks with different topics and faculty each week. In addition to these seminar-based training methods, a number of mega-churches offer an internship approach to training, where they bring one or more candidates on staff for a period of time and then send them out with a large core group from their own congregation.
Different Strokes . . .
A huge variety of training approaches to tickle your particular fancy!
- Parachurch boot camps. Designed for the members of a church planting team, this sort of event can vary from several days to two weeks in length.
- Internships. A large, well-resourced sponsoring church invites one or more carefully selected apprentices to join their staff. They may spend as long as a year getting to know people within the congregation and developing rapport with a sizable core group being sent out from this mega-church site.
- Seminary training. More evangelical seminaries now offer specialized degrees with an emphasis in church planting and/or missions, for those who like to combine their basic theological education with the practical aspects of planting a new church upon completion of their degree program.
- Do-It-Yourself (DIY). Some prospective planters are unable to pursue formal training events, for a variety of reasons, so they utilize various resources (CD's, DVD's, books, networking, online forums, personal coaches, etc) to learn the ropes.
- Denominational Training. Many evangelical denominations offer free training to prospective planters within their own constituency, usually in the form of seminars, conferences, and workshops.
