My Crab Pizza Recipe

For thousands of years, crabs have been part of the lives of many people. It has been a sea creature that has filled the bellies of man and ultimately helped man to survive through life. These crabs are part of the crustacean family just like the shrimps, lobsters etc. Did you know that the crab is among the oldest species existing on Earth? The term crab is derived from Middle English. History reveals that the crab dates back 200 million years ago. This makes the crab virtually a living fossil! Another interesting thing about the crab is that as you all know, the zodiac sign Cancer resembles that of the crab.

Speaking about crab in terms of cooking, crab is the second most famous crustacean that is eaten. Remember that a great number of edible crab species are those that have 5 pairs of legs. The front ones are the large pincers. Among the 4400 varieties of crab, most of them are located in North America. Through time, different crab recipes have been created all throughout the world especially in the areas where it is abundant.

Now, we are fortunate that even though some of us might be very far from bodies of water where these delicious fresh crabs are obtained, it is still possible for us to get a hold of one thanks to the advent of supermarkets, grocery stores and the like. With this, there is absolutely no reason for anyone not to be able to enjoy eating crabs except maybe if you are allergic to them or if your religion does not permit you to eat one.

When buying crabs, keep in mind that the best ones are the fresh crabs. However, if you find it too costly and impossible to obtain, you can also make use of frozen crabs. If ever you are using frozen crabs, do make sure to defrost and drain the excess moisture. The moisture accumulated might disrupt your final outcome with the recipe that you are preparing.

Here is a unique recipe that features the luscious crabs. I incorporated it into one of my Pizza Recipes so that my family and friends could enjoy eating it during one of our backyard lunches and snacks. In this recipe, I am using my usual Pizza Dough Recipe for this crab pizza recipe. You can choose to purchase a readymade crust if you do not wish to make pizza from scratch. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar

  • ½ teaspoon of salt

  • 3 cups of flour (all-purpose)

  • ¼ ounces of active dry yeast

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 1 cup of water

For the Toppings:

  • 2 cups of crab meat (with the cartilage take out then it should be drained and flaked)

  • 1 teaspoon of dried basil

  • ¼ cup of milk

  • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder

  • 16 ounces of cream cheese (softened)

  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano

  • 1 cup of Swiss cheese (grated or shredded)

  • 1 cup of feta cheese (crumbled)

How to Prepare My Crab Pizza Recipe:

Take out a large enough bowl and mix in the yeast, sugar, salt and 1 ½ cups of flour.

Obtain a saucepan and add in water and oil.

Heat it. Add this to the flour mixture.

Mix it and little by little add in water until the dough becomes a bit soft. Lightly flour a surface and place the dough on that surface. Knead it well until the dough is elastic and has a smooth consistency.

Using an oiled bowl put the dough that you formed inside. Turn it to the other side so that some the oil will cover the entire dough. Cover set it aside in a warm place until it doubles in size.

Then, roll it out once more on a surface that you floured lightly and divide it in half. Form the dough into rounds. Once you are done, get a baking pan or a pizza pan if you have one. Settle the dough on the baking pan and bake it in the oven at 450 degrees for 12 minutes.

Also check if the crust has turned to a light brown color. Meanwhile, combine the following ingredients: crabmeat, cream cheese, basil, feta cheese, oregano, and garlic powder. Spread out the mixture on top of each crust.

After that, add in the Swiss cheese.

Place it back to the oven let it bake for another 12 minutes or so until the crust becomes golden and the cheese has melted. If you are serving this recipe as an appetizer, you can cut them into bite size pieces.

Serve warm.
