Where to find storage online to organize your craft closet
I live in the Dallas area, which means I can get just about anything I need within five miles of my house. But I'm one of the lucky ones. Many of you have to drive 30 minutes or more to get the nearest craft store and still might not be able to find what you need.
The sources on this page include Amazon, Joann.com, CreateForLess.com, Stacks and Stacks, Organize.com and any others I can find. When I have coupons or sales available for them, I'll be sure to let you know! In fact, right now, you can get free shipping at Joann.com for orders of $35 or more! Just click the banner below.

Small Things

Small Items
Any type of craft has lots of bits and bobs that need to be managed. I can't be the only one who hears the random metallic noise of a lost bead or snap or finding as the vacuum cleaner sucks it up!
For years, I've used old Tupperware containers to sort and store my tiny sewing notions - hooks, safety pins, snaps - and they work fabulously. They're colored, so I could actually try to remember that the pins are in the blue one, but also clear so I can see items without opening every container.
Criteria for a good system
Small containers
Coding - labels, color
Clear in some way - lid or container
Customizable so you can have different sizes?

Patterns and Books

The good thing about most patterns and books is that you're dealing with fairly large and rather consistently sized items so they're a lot easier to store. That said, you still need a system because if you're like me, you buy a lot of patterns and books in hopes of "some day". (I have a lot of some days planned.)
My craft room is full of bookcases; I even had some built in to give me extra space. The shelves hold supplies as well as books and patterns. I also have separate boxes and books for patterns, although I'm growing out of that system.
Some patterns can be a little tougher to keep organized, though. Sewing patterns, in particular, never seem to go back into the envelopes they came in. I'm working on a system there using plastic sleeves and notebooks. I've also seen some people who have used plastic sleeves/envelopes big enough to hold the pattern with all the project materials, then hang them in the craft closet with clip hangers.
Criteria
Sturdy
Enough space
Easy to see what you have
Easy to sort through
Customizable
Shelving
Boxes
Tabs
Notebooks
Plastic sleeves
hangers
Project Materials

This is going to be a tricky section because there are so many crafts, so many different supplies, so many different materials. How on earth to cover it all? Ack!
So here's what we're looking for - storage space that allows for multiples of something, storage for flat items, storage for
Paint tree
Fabric (plastic boxes? Open boxes)
Yarn - shoe holders
Floss organizers

- My problem is never enough space; maybe I just have too much stuff? But I do use most of it at least once a year! As an artist I collect a lot of books, photos, sketches, patterns, et. and they are hard to store and organize in any sensible manner! Add in paper, especially big sheets of watercolor paper that need to be stored flat, canvases in all sizes a billion tubes/bottles of paint of several different types......

- Without some kind of organization, craft supplies disappear into a black hole, never to be seen again--until you move!
