So, You've Hunkered Down For the Night
You've made some tools on your first day, built your hole in the wall to stave off monsters, and are secure for the first night's rest.
But why wait til morning? There's more work to do, and fun to have.
From The Day 1 Minecrafting Guide you have some tools, torches and a crafting table so you can make more stuff. Let's take advantage of the blocks around you and some knowledge to make the rest of the items you'll need to outfit your cave and make some more, even cooler stuff.

More Home-Based Tools
There are a number of tools, like axes, shovels and picks which you will take with you as you explore the Minecrafting world. There are others, like the crafting table that are home-based. You leave them in one place, and come back home to take advantage of them.
These are your crafting tools, and include the chest and furnace.

The Chest
You have a pretty big inventory, but you will quickly run out of room as you collect materials, and materials made from other materials.
One solution is to carry essential tools and building materials with you, and leave other items you don't need all the time in a chest.
To build a chest, you will need:
A Crafting Table
Wooden Planks
Open your crafting table and place a wooden plank in each of the nine squares of the crafting grid except for the middle square. A chest will appear beside the grid. Click it to attach it to your cursor, drop it on your toolbar, and place it next to your crafting table. You now have some additional capacity.

A chest holds 27 stacks of stuff.
You can build multiple chests, and if you put two chests together, by placing two single chests next to each other, you'll create a double chest.
There is no advantage to a double chest, as it holds 54 stacks, twice the capacity of the chest, but changes the graphic so it looks like a double chest, instead of two chests beside each other.
*shrug* it's a cool touch.

The Furnace
The other home-based tool you're going to want to build is a furnace.
The furnace allows you to smelt metal, cook food, turn one kind of block into another kind of block, and generally transform raw materials into usable materials.
Along with your crafting table, you'll be able to make just about anything in the game with the furnace.
To build a furnace you will need:
A Crafting Table
8 Blocks of Cobblestone (created when you mine stone)
Open the crafting table and fill all of the squares in the crafting grid with cobblestone except for the center square.
Click the furnace in the result square and add it to your toolbar at the bottom of your inventory.
Roll over it with your mousewheel and click it in to place where you want it.
