Get Creative with Arts and Crafts for Toddlers

This complete guide to Crafts for 1 Year Olds provides everything you need to know about crafting for very young toddlers!

Looking for 1 Year Old Crafts ideas? It can be hard to come up with crafts suitable for 1-year-olds, as most crafts involve sharp tools or small pieces that are as likely to be eaten as they are stuck to something! Thankfully there are some creative ideas and safe materials that are suitable for the under-two's.

Read on for lots of ideas on arts and crafts for 1 year olds and keep an eye out for updates on more toddler craft ideas as my daughter and I explore more fun and creativity!

Arts and Crafts for 1 Year Olds

Crafts for 1 Year Olds - Copyright of AuthorI'm mum to a 2-year-old girl and wanted to introduce her to more creative activities back when she was around 14 months. She already loved books, puzzles and music so I knew she would love doing art-based creative things too.

But when your little one is between one and two, what arts and crafts are available to them that are safe and age-appropriate? Scissors, sharp objects and standard felt pens or sharp pencils are out of the question right now.

Children of this age are still learning so much, including walking and talking, and many objects will still be finding their way into little mouths or being thrown across the room!

This page offers ideas for fun colouring, art and craft ideas that are accessible to very young toddlers. Allowing your 1 year old to explore with artistry will open their imagination up to creative pursuits in the future, too.

The good news is that at this age, getting the necessary materials together is inexpensive, much can be made yourself, and it doesn't have to cause a big mess!

Colouring for Babies and Toddlers

Get Creative with Non-Toxic Colouring for 12 Months +

Coloring for Toddlers

Coloring for Babies and Toddlers Stimulates Creativity

The stage where your child turns from baby to toddler is an exciting one. Little by little, a world of new activities and games opens up to them!

Colouring is a wonderful way to explore colors, art, imagination and shapes, stimulating finger dexterity and creativity! But as with so many everyday objects, standard crayons, felt tips and colouring pencils can be a hazard to small children. Pencils are sharp, while ink and wax can be toxic or certainly not good for your little one if they start licking or chewing on their colouring tools.

Luckily, those wonderful people at Crayola came up with a 12 months plus range of colouring sets, which are safe and suitable for 1 year olds. Of course, common sense still needs to be applied - always supervise your child during craft and colouring sessions, and if things are still going into mouths readily, wait a little longer before you start colouring with them, or perhaps only colour whilst your child has a pacifier.

When my daughter was about 14 months old, I got out a box of my own coloured pencils to see how she got on with them. She was past the stage of putting everything into her mouth and thoroughly enjoyed sorting the pencils in and out of the box. I had to watch her carefully though as she was prone to waving the pencils towards her face and nearly poking herself in the eye, so careful supervision was required! At first she was simply interested in them as sorting objects, but she soon enjoyed trying to copy me colouring with them once I showed her how, so I knew she was ready for her own special set.

What You'll Need:

* Paper or card - start with plain white paper and advance to coloured once your toddler has seen how the different coloured pens and pencils work
* Markers, crayons or chunky pencils suitable for 12 months
* Colouring books or printables
* A space for colouring - either a plastic toddler table, or a covered space such as a table with a wipeable cloth on or an old sheet on the floor
* Crayola's markers are easily washable off clothes, hands and more, but it might be a good idea to invest in a little toddler apron or smock if you are going to be doing this regularly!

You can have fun and learn at the same time, too! Incorporate animals, letters, numbers, objects and other ideas into your colouring activities and help your toddler learn the words. You can also involve them in holidays and celebrations such as Easter, Valentine's Day and more by theming your colouring sheets. While they won't understand what the day is for, they will be learning about new objects, words and shapes and you can enjoy a fun family activity.

You can also use colouring as a basis for future crafts as they get older, such as making cards, pictures, everyday objects and presents for friends and family.

Here is my pick of the best colouring products available for your 1 year old:

Crayola Beginnings First Markers (8 Pack)

Price: £2.99
BUY NOW
These first marker pens from Crayola get a well-deserved high star ranking on Amazon, and I give them five out of five myself. The pack contains 8 markers that have safe nibs suitable for 12 months and up, and they are brilliant!

They produce strong, bold colours, so unlike pencils and crayons, which have to be pressed down fairly hard to make a mark on paper, little ones can get to grips with these right away. My daughter loved watching the bold colours take form on the page!

They are easy to hold as well, but that's not the best thing about these ingenious pens - they are "super washable" too, and rinse off without soap or scrubbing. The minute my daughter got one in her hand, it was, well, all over her hand... but it wiped straight off with the barest of moisture.

We have also tried out the items below. The pack of 24 Crayola Beginnings Jumbo Crayons are nice and chunky for little hands to hold and feature a range of strong, bold colours. The chunky pencils are also excellent and my daughter gets on with all the colouring mediums very well. The colouring book is also very well designed - it has fun farm scenes inside, which my daughter is able to recognise from her farm storybooks and soft toy farm. Each page is partly coloured in already, with greyed out parts to stick the accompanying stickers on, while the rest is for colouring in.

Sculpting Crafts for 1 Year Olds

Crayola Dough and Homemade Dough for Modelling

Sculpting is great fun no matter what your age, and great exercise for the fingers, too! When kids are old enough they can have lots of fun with Play-Doh, plasticine and, eventually, clay and polymer clay, but what about children as young as one?

The good news is that tiny tots don't have to miss out! There are two options - you can make your own edible version of play dough, or you can buy special, non-toxic dough that is safe for young toddlers, courtesy of those great people at Crayola again!

The great thing about the edible dough is that your child can eat it afterwards! The only disadvantage to this is that you might have to explain at a later age that proper Play-Doh is NOT edible!

Recipes for Edible Play Dough

I have used two versions of "safe" dough before - salt dough, which is a staple in my creative arts anyway, and edible peanut butter dough! If you want to keep your child's creations then opt for salt dough because you can harden them by baking afterwards, and even paint them together when your 1-year-old is old enough. Salt dough does not harden to the same condition as clay but providing you handle the finished item carefully and don't keep it near heat, it should survive just fine.

Important Note: If there is a family history of allergies or your child is allergic to peanuts, do not use the peanut butter recipes.

You can buy edible dough mix, but it is recommended for ages 3+. If you're interested it is called Yummy Dough (also available as Yummy Dough in the US too). If you want to buy toddler-safe dough suitable for 1-year-olds, I recommend the Crayola Beginnings Dough which is not edible, but excellent. Here's my review:

Crayola - Dough Tub

BUY NOW
These are individual 200g tubs of special Crayola Beginnings Dough that are suitable for 1+ (make sure that if you look for dough in the shops, it has "Beginnings" on it as Crayola also make dough for older children). It comes in red, green, blue, yellow, orange and pink and the only downside is that the colours are randomly selected for you. We ordered two and received red and green, both lovely and vibrant (and ideal if it was Christmas!). I assume that if you order six tubs you will get one of each.

The dough has been designed to be easily washed from most surfaces and does not stain hands or clothes It is true to its word but as with all clay-type products it does get under your fingernails so check your tot's nails afterwards. It is easily pliable and excellent for developing your little one's hand dexterity. My daughter is super strong anyway (well, she was born in the Year of the Ox!) so has no problem moulding it but I would say that it is easy to use anyway.

You can also buy a Crayola Beginnings Dough Set of 3 Tubs.

As your toddler develops and grows with the product you could try using safe tools with it, such as rolling it out with a little craft rolling pin and cutting out shapes with cutters (use plastic rather than metal and always help and supervise). Have fun making shapes and acting out scenes with any funny-shaped animals you make. Join in with the fun and laugh at the funny shapes you make too!

NB. Play-Doh tubs are suitable from 24 months so if you want to sculpt before the age of 2 then go with the Crayola.

I have not been able to find an equivalent in the US yet - there is Crayola Dough available but for older toddlers, not in the Beginnings range.

Is it Important to Indulge in Crafts for 1-Year-Olds?

It is said that arts and crafts stimulate imagination, aid finger dexterity, and unleash creativity in small children. I have also read that activities such as hand painting and messing around with colouring tools can help toddlers release pent up energy and reduce their "acting out" time. Do you agree?

Arts and Crafts are great for parent and toddler bonding!

Finger Painting Crafts for 1 Year Olds

Safe Homemade "Paint" and Fun Things to Do with It!

From around the age of 2, little ones can begin using toddler-safe washable finger paints and poster paints.Up until then, you can improvise and experiment with homemade "paint"!

The most basic of these is pudding paint! Something like a gooey chocolate pudding or sauce is ideal - your little one can have fun making finger and hand prints with the gooey chocolate and you have no worries about them putting their hands in their mouths, because it's all perfectly edible! This is a great and safe way to teach your 1-year-old how to do the painting crafts, so that by the time they come to use real paint, they will know what to do and hopefully will keep the paint on the paper!

If you're finger painting, cover the table or work surface with a splash mat or washable cover and progress from scrap paper to better quality paper once you start making designs you may want to keep or turn into gifts. For hand printing, work in an open space on the floor with a splash mat and large pieces of paper, making sure that anything you don't want covered in chocolate or paint is out of the way!

Recipes for Edible Paint

If you can't abide the thought of a good pud going to waste, or want something a little less sticky, you can also make your own homemade paints for your 1-year-old. Here are some great recipes:

Edible Finger Paint
Edible Yoghurt Finger Paint
Edible Flour Poster Paints

(use food coloring or homemade edible tempura paint to make this edible)
Condensed Milk Paint
Homemade Paint Recipes

(includes various poster paints, finger paints and face paints)

More Food Crafts for Kids

So, what other crafty things can you get up to with food? Here are some ideas.

Paint Cookies
If you're baking cookies for little one and you, involve your toddler by getting them to decorate the cookies before they go in the oven! Make some Homemade Edible Tempura Paint and show your little one how to brush on a colourful design with a paintbrush. You can help them add some yummy sprinkles too!

Vegetable and Potato Stampers
Cut some potatoes in half and carve out shapes into the flat side, such as hearts, stars, circles, triangles etc. Voila, you have some fun, safe shape stampers that your toddler can dip into chocolate or one of your other edible paints! You can also cut up vegetables such as carrot sticks and use them to stamp with as well. Have fun together exploring what shapes can be made with the end of a carrot or a cucumber slice, or see what pattern you can make when a painted carrot is rolled across the page!

Keeping Tidy with Crafts for 1 Year Olds

Aprons, Splash Mats and Activity Areas

Early Learning Centre Table for ages 1-6
(chairs sold separately, also available in blue and red)

You'll need an area for arts and crafts where you have plenty of space and won't damage anything precious! Cover surfaces or floors with splash mats, old sheets or newspaper and if you're doing something very messy, or crafting regularly, you might want to invest in a smock or apron for your toddler. The wipe-clean tabards are excellent for small children, such as The Gruffalo one below. Although they are marketed for ages 2-4. I would say they are one size fits all for the under fours. We have the Jemima Puddleduck one, which is supposed to be for 3 and up, but it has fitted my daughter since she was 1 and still fits her aged 2.

Always wash your toddler's hands as soon as you have finished and always supervise them, to ensure they don't put anything in their eyes or mouths that they shouldn't. Depending on what you have been doing, a wipe down or wash may suffice, but messier crafts or use of products that may smell (such as yoghurt-based paints) mean a bath will probably be in order!

If you plan to craft regularly with your toddler (please do! It's so much fun) then it's worth investing in a little plastic desk or table with a chair. This can be used for all kinds of things and most will last them for a good few years. We found the perfect one from the Early Learning Centre (pictured) - it's a plastic table with 2 little chairs (so ideal for siblings, visiting friends or even a companion toy!) that lasts from ages 1-6 and very reasonably priced. The chairs have solid backs as well so they are nice and comfortable.

I am a father of six and my 2 year old son will sit and "draw" freehand for almost an hour at a time. I find it interesting how stimulating it can be for him. He is otherwise running and playing nonstop. Great Lens!
