The Craftsman Bungalow Architectural Style
A Brief History of the Craftsman Bungalow
The Derivation of the Terms

"Craftsman" and "Bungalow" are two terms that have become merged to the point that they are used almost interchangeably. The bungalow is a form of house or building, with the term coming to us from the country of India. It is derived from the Bengali noun "bangla", referring to a low house with galleries (porches) all around it. "Craftsman" comes directly from the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 1900's and refers more to an architectural style. The Movement embodied the use of simple forms and natural materials. In the United States, two California brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, have become famous for their home designs that combined Arts and Crafts ideas with their admiration of, and fascination, for the simple wooden architecture of China and Japan.
Common Craftsman and Bungalow Characteristics
- Usually 1 - 1 1/2 stories
- Low-pitched roof, hipped, gabled, sometimes with a clipped gable, often with broad eaves
- Dormers in shed, gabled, and hipped styles, often included in combination
- Exposed rafter tails and beams, elaborate rafter ends, and occasionally simple, decorative roof ridge finials. Decorative (false) beams or braces commonly added under gables.
- Large front porch as an extension underneath the main roof, creating an outdoor room
- Tapered or square columns supporting the porch roof, built upon wood, brick or stone bases
- 4-over-1 or 6-over-1 double-hung windows, often seen in a continuous bank. Framed with simple, wide casings.
- Fireplace chimneys built of brick or stone, with the chimney extending up through, and surrounded by the overhanging eave
- Exterior finished in wood siding, stucco, brick and stone, used in combination of at least two of these
A 1 1/2 Story Bungalow
Here is a well-maintained 1 and 1/2 story bungalow with a double front gable. It has quadruple porch columns with brick bases and an exposed decorative front rafter. The windows have very likely been replaced, as they are the more updated single pane over single pane. The porch extends beyond the roofline on both sides, but is still surrounded by the customary low brick wall. Though this house appears to be well taken care of, a more creative paint job, emphasizing the column and rafter details and window casings, would make this house a standout. A classic Craftsman-style front door would be an excellent addition as well. A Craftsman Home with a Shed Roof Dormer
This home has a great example of a shed roof dormer, also known as an "eyelid" dormer. A shed dormer provides more attic space and head room, and can be identified by the fact that is has a single-planed roof, pitched at a shallower angle than the main roof. It is also a little different in that it has 4 sets of paired, side-by-side square columns on stone base with the bases connected with a picket-fence-type design. It appears that the right half of the porch has been enclosed with screening, most likely a later addition, allowing for an open air room that keeps out the mosquitoes. The is another unique bungalow that could be reborn with a paint makeover with contrasting detail to showcase its craftsman architecture. A Bungalow with a Porte-Cochere
This home features the classic tapered columns on a base of red brick . It also has the typical exposed rafters ends. Its main front window consist of a bank of 3, ,a center window that is 5 -over -1, double hung, framed by two 3 -over-1 double hung windows. This bungalow also has something not seen in some other parts of the country - a porte-cochère (pronounced port co-SHARE, from French, also called a "carriage porch") is the architectural term for a portico-like structure at a main or secondary entrance, through which it is possible for a motor vehicle to passor park - essentially a "carport". It als incorporates the common features of gable openings perpendicular to each other (ie. at 90 degrees) and exposed rafter ends. Unusual Features on This Bungalow
Here is yet another Craftsman home with very different features, but still with the classic elemant, just presented a liittle diferently. It has the typical; low pitched roof, with multi-directional gables, with exposed rafter ends. However, it has beefy round columns holding the roofline of an L-shaped wraparound porch - something not often seen. As well, there are entry steps on each side of the porch with a side entrance to the interior. Also, it is all yellow brick, with a knee wall of brick laid with a patterned inset. The windows are the more colonial style of 8 panes over 1, but they still may very well be original. Tackling a Restoration Project like this can be a daunting project, but it is also fun and exceptionally rewarding.
You will be saving a little piece of history.
A Remodeled Craftsman
This home may qualify to be called an Aeroplane Craftsman. This is defined as a Craftsman building with a set-back second-story and wide overhanging eaves giving the impression of airplane wings. It has the typical low pitched roof with a double, front-facing gable. This home has been remodeled somewhat out of the Craftsman character, but is well maintained and still has many of the original features. It has fully exposed rafters on the 2nd story, 6-over-1 double hung windows and a combination brick and stucco exterior. The front porch has been fully enclosed, and the columns supporting the porte-cochere appear to have been replaced, possibly with white wrought iron supports. The curved entry steps are most likely not original. Nevertheless, the house still has Craftsman appeal. A Bungalow with Clipped Gables
This is a fine example of a bungalow with a pyramid or clipped-gable roof with decorative, false rafter braces. It is brick and stucco with a porte-coucher supported by full brick columns. Though painted a more accurate original Craftsman color of the period, there is nice trim work around the unusual curved roofline of the porch that would be accentuated if painted a contrasting, coordinating color. Notice the exposed brick chimney extending up through the overhanging gable. A Bungalow with Clean Lines
Here is a cleanly restored bungalow exemplifying a cross-gabled roofline, with tapered porch columns over a stucco base. It has very clean lines with no exposed gables or decorative brackets. The exterior is stucco and wood siding. It has an exposed chimney, also done in a stucco finish. The windows may not be original as they are 4-over-4, and the front door has been replaced as well. However, the paint color is accurate for the period, and the contrasting trim color around the base of the columns gives a nice look as well. An Ultimate Craftsman Restoration
This beautiful home has been meticulously and accurately restored. It has a double-gabled dormer, interesting decorative knee-braces, a port-cochere (no longer used as such). Notice the very accurate Craftsman front door, windows, and trim work around each. The exterior uses brick, wood siding and shingles, with a paint job that accentuates all of its fine Craftsman details. A true beauty!
