Why I love the Craftsman Style

Some images that come to mind when I think of "craftsman style" are: eating slow-cooked meals at solid a wood farm table, reading a good book by the glow of a hand-tiled fireplace, drinking peppermint tea while playing a game of chess on a hand-carved game board. To me, craftsman style is more than just architectural design - it is a lifestyle. It's a way of living in the moment with all of the beauty and simplicity that life has to offer...if only we will slow down long enough to experience it.

This lens will focus specifically on craftsman style lighting (also known as arts and crafts style or mission style). Clean lines and simple materials make craftsman style lighting so appealing to many people. Whether it's a wooden table lamp, a hand-forged copper lantern, or a hanging glass pendant, craftsman style lighting is warm, cozy and welcoming.

Japanese and Craftsman Style Fusion

Sometimes, it is very apparent that traditional Japanese architectural styles have influenced craftsman design. Take a look at the Japanese street lantern on the right (photo by Jim Epler on Flickr). Notice it's simple parallel lines and overall shape. Now here are some American Craftsman lanterns that bear similarities:

Arroyo Craftsman

Arroyo Craftsman is probably the most popular name in Craftsman home lighting. Their products are all made by hand - true to the arts and crafts tradition. Each and every light fixture from Arroyo is made with the best materials and the highest quality workmanship.

Even though you can purchase Arroyo Craftsman lighting for your home, it can also be found in many Frank Lloyd Wright Homes, The Park Grove Inn, and the Gamble House. This is a true testament to a company who describes itself as "an island in the ocean of the mass-produced and disposable".

Below you will find some of the Arts & Crafts Lighting that they offer:

Craftsman Outdoor Lighting

Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright, two renowned architects specializing in the craftsman style, both felt that the exterior of a home should be in harmony with its natural surroundings.
Craftsman outdoor lighting
is simple and functional, and its materials compliment the natural beauty of the outdoors. Many times, a craftsman style outdoor fixture will turn even more beautiful with time as it becomes weather-beaten and aged.

An arts and crafts table lamp is great for a reading nook, bedside table, or area that just needs a little extra light and punch of style. Tiffany lamps are of the arts & crafts style and add color with their stained glass designs.

Love these examples of Craftsman style lighting. One of my favorite styles of architecture and these certainly would look great in a cute little bungalow.
