Valentine's Day Cards History 

The first Valentine's Day greeting cards

The custom of expressing one's love and sentimental feelings for a sweetheart on Valentine's Day began in the Middle Ages. Poetry, song and letters were the original way to "send" a Valentine to a lover.

The oldest known paper Valentine card dates to the fifteenth century; it is housed in the British Museum.

The practice of sending cards for Valentine's Day grew steadily in popularity throughout Europe and around 1800 the first commercial Valentine cards appeared.

In the mid-1800's the first mechanical Valentines, cards with moving parts, cards with pop-ups and fancy trims such as paper honeycombs appeared.

Until the advent of the penny post, however, most Valentine greeting cards were hand-delivered. Today, Valentine's Day is the second most popular holiday for mailing greeting cards, just behind Christmas.

Valentines were originally expressions of love - frilly, romantic folded small works of art, decorated with poetry and symbols of affection including cupid, hearts, flowers and lace. Today those same pictorial elements remain popular, however many cards come in humorous or fanciful designs, especially cards for children. Bears, cats, dogs, monsters and pictures of sweet treats are popular Valentine themes today.

And, for those who find the whole idea of Valentine's Day repugnant or commercial, there are now many 'anti-Valentine' greeting cards, posters and apparel available.
