Crate Training - Crate Training Dog - Crate Training Puppy

Crate Training. Is crate training like putting your dog in jail or will it help eliminate his behavior problems or housetrain a puppy?  Find out what I learned about crate training a puppy...

Well, I had heard that using a crate would help me with housetraining my new puppy, but I had no idea how to do it or what size crate to buy...

It so happens that I've been listening for over ten years to a radio talk show called "Talkin' Animals with Dr. Dog" on KFMB760 in San Diego.  I'd always been intrigued by the techniques shared by "Dr. Dog" (Dr. Dennis Fetko).  He seemed to really know how to get into a dog's head!

One day Dr. Fetko announced on his radio show that he had published an ebook, Dr. Dog's FAST, EASY, FUN Behavior Solutions with all of his methods for eliminating dog behavior problems and housetraining a puppy.  Needless to say, I purchased his ebook right away.  Here is some info from this ebook:

"To humans, a crate is a cage and a cage is jail and none of that is any good whatsoever.  To a dog, a well-socialized crate is a den and canines have been living in dens for, oh, roughly a million years now--give or take a week.  To a dog a den is WONDERFUL! (After you crate train your dog) You've just got to convince little Balthazar that this square fiberglass and metal contraption is indeed a den.  That's why I said a well-socialized crate--after successful dog crate training.

But don't just get a crate, throw your dog into it and go away for the day. That may stress an already upset dog enough to cause him to begin chewing himself.  I've seen dogs chew their own paws to the bone out of stress and fear.

Used properly by crate training your puppy or adult dog, a crate is a great gift to the dog.  Used badly it's as cruel a form of punishment as beating.  Remember, a crate is used to prevent the problem; it is never used to punish your dog."

Learn more about Dr. Fetko ("Dr. Dog") and his methods on crate training your dog or crate training your puppy.

Quotes from Dr. Dennis Fetko, "Dr. Dog":

"In dog training, 'jerk' is a noun and not a verb.  If anyone has to jerk a dog to train him, he should not be allowed near anything with a pulse."

"Obedience training is great--but it won't solve behavior problems.  If you obedience-train a dog that bites, you end up with a dog that Sits, Stays, Heels--and bites..."

What Size Crate is Best for Crate Training My Dog?

Crate Size is Crucial to Successful Dog Crate Training!

Crate Training: Large crates are not better.

Here's a tip about the size of the crate to use in crate training puppies or dogs: the smaller the better. Your dog should just about fill his crate. You're not doing Genghis a favor by getting him a crate the size of your garage. See the example in the photo near the top of this page...

On the contrary, the larger the crate, the less security it represents to the dog. Do this crate training your dog or puppy right with the right-sized crate and proper crate socialization and you'll never run out of ways to use your dog's crate to his best advantage. You'll also wonder how anyone gets along without a crate for their dog!

Using a crate is appealing to a dog's natural instinct as a den animal, since dogs are genetically designed to find a secure place to sleep. Your dog's crate training will provide a secure place for your dog, and will help your training process go much smoother.

Nice Lens. I like the "designer crate" you have shown. Pretty cool! It's unfortunate that so many people view crates as a jail for their dog, as you have experienced, if done correctly, it can be a very good thing for you and your canine friend.

Fantastic information here...I truly believe that a dog crate is one of the most underrated pieces of pet equipment out there, and not enough people know about and use them! I found a great dog crate article detailing everything you need to know about dog crates ... http://petdogcrates.com/dog-crate-101-an-introduction-to-dog-crates/ --- hopefully it can inspire dog owners to purchase a dog crate and really give their dog a comfortable and safe home within their home! Take care and thanks again.
