Crate Training Your Puppy

Crate training a puppy makes training your puppy easier overall. The crate is a safe bed and place for your puppy, and you'll find the puppy will know it's their own private place. Crate training isn't for punishment, it needs to be a happy and relaxing place for your puppy.

When choosing a crate, make sure that the crate is the proper size. Your puppy should be able to stand up, turn around and lay back down comfortably. If your puppy is going to be a large dog, you can get a larger crate and divide it with cardboard.

Putting treats or toys in the crate will encourage him to go into the crate. Expect the puppy to sniff it out and take a little bit to get used to it. Make it a nice place, because you don't want the puppy to be scared of the new environment. Let the puppy get used to it, don't force the situation, or he'll lost trust. Praise your puppy after going in. Let your puppy get used to being in the crate for short periods of time. Repetition is key, as you slowly increase the time.
