The Forgotten Clothing: Crawling Knee Pads for Babies

As we all know, we are not born knowing how to walk. First we can't move at all, then we learn to turn, only to then learn to sort of "snake" across, leading to learning how to crawl, which results in learning to walk. It's a long process and the penultimate step is the ever so baby icon: Crawling.

When we think of a baby moving about, we usually think of crawling. Many of us stop to think of them as babies, and instead as toddlers, once they start to walk. What we also don't think about is how painful crawling can be without protection.

Understanding The Pain

Here's a little exercise to help you understand why knee pads can be important. I want you to crawl around the house at your baby's normal crawling space for 30 minutes (you can oft course stop for a second or two here and there). Try to mimic your baby's crawling behavior as much as possible.

Are you done? Tell me, how are your knees? That's right, they HURT. In addition, one (or both) of your knees is probably forming a bruise.

Now imagine a baby who does this all the time! Assuming you let your child roam around - supervised of course - to get some good full body exercise, that means your baby probably walks for a total of at least 2-3 hours a day.

My baby doesn't crawl that much in a day
If your baby isn't getting that much crawling exercise, you may want to reconsider letting your baby have more crawling freedom. I know it can be time consuming to let a baby crawl around since you do have to watch out, but you don't have to do all 2 hours at once. Just do 30 minutes here and there 4 times total. This will help build leg, arm, and abdominal muscles for learning to lift, push, pull, walk, and of course just increasing general motor skills.

If you just can't have knee pads

Sadly, not everyone will be able to benefit from knee pads. After all, it's quite possible that:

  • Your baby really dislikes them

  • Your baby crawls so much, they rip far quicker than supposed to

  • Your baby is so agitated, it's too difficult to put them on

While it's unlikely for you to run across such issues, they are possible. I would still advise getting at least one pair of knee pads just to see how it goes, but if you have the above problems, you can get thicker and more cushioned pants (not ideal if it's hot)
Likewise, you could only let your baby crawl about on well-carpeted surfaces, which can be expensive if you don't already have carpeting, and potentially cause rug burn depending on the consistency of the rug and the activity of the child.

Snazzy Baby Knee Pads

Snazzy Baby Knee Pads, Seafoam Green

Pros

  • Protects baby's knees from sores

  • Prevents kids from scratching previous scabs

  • Adjustable velcro

  • Velctro is difficult for a lot of kids to handle (requires very precise fine motor skills) so it's a good choice

  • Quality cloth and padding - Very durable

  • Small enough for babies 6months to 2.5 years old

  • Also useful for when babies learn to walk

Cons

  • Padding can be too bulky for babies who are just learning to crawl (but perfectly fine for babies who mastered crawling)

  • Even with the difficulty of taking away the velcro, a baby could still just push the pad down if he/she tries hard enough

  • Can slide down if put over clothing

  • Very warm, bad for summer time

This is a great idea - who came up with it?

Well I don't know about kneepads for cleaning. There's the Fiskars 9418 Ultra Light Kneelers Knee Pads. It's one size fits all, not too bulky, and protects from moisture. It's meant for garden cleaning, but the way I see it: if it can handle that, it can handle a house.
Also worth nothing: the Neiko Comfort Gel-Filled Protective Knee Pads.

Too bad they don't make any of these in my size. Cleaning floors would be a whole lot easier! This is a great product idea for babies and tots. Thank you for sharing this helpful information.

Thank you so much for the blessing ^^ I'm glad you liked it. And yes, whoever came up with such products was a genius. They can definitely help overly active babies.
