Recycle and reuse broken crayons
Have you ever wondered what to do with all those broken, stubby pieces of crayons that end up in the bottom of every crayon box?
When my children were younger, we ended up with a shoe box full of them - yucky colored crayons they wouldn't use, little stubs of their favorite colored crayons, and crayons that had snapped in two.
Anyone with a child knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's an unwritten rule amongst children: when the crayon breaks you throw it in the bottom of the box.
Perhaps you remember doing this yourself?
Quit throwing away the old broken crayons; you can recycle them and have fun at the same time!
Make A Crayon Candle
A fun project to do with your kids!
Wondering what to do with all those crayons the kids don't use anymore? Turn them into candles you can use or give as gifts!
Materials Needed:
· 2 Pint milk carton.
· Broken crayons
· Candle Wick
· Scissors
Instructions:
Peel paper off of crayons and separate colors accordingly.
Cut off the top off a milk carton so that you have a "box" with one end open. Cut the sides down, leaving six inches above the height that you want for your candle.
Melt crayons over medium heat. A coffee can in a double boiler will work as well.
Place wick into the milk carton. Be sure that the wick is fairly centered and running the entire length of the carton. Tying the wick to a pencil that will sit on the top of the carton is a good way to ensure the wick stays in place.
Pour melted wax/crayon mixture into the carton filling to the top.
Note: If you prefer to use multiple colors fill only part way. Once that layer hardens proceed to the next color until the container is full.
Let sit until hardened, then carefully cut and peel away the carton from the candle.
You now have a beautiful candle.
Tips For Making Crayon Candles
Vote for your favorite, or add your own tip!
Use a taper candle in place of the candle wick. Taper candles are far easier to acquire than the wicks if you don't have a good craft shop nearby.

A piece of clay at the bottom of the taper candle will allow it to stand straight up in the container. Much easier than hanging a wick.

Unlike actual candle wax, crayon wax does not evaporate. Make sure that you burn the crayon candle in a deep dish to catch all of the melting wax.

You can use regular candle wax and add just a few crayons of the desired color to tint it.

Make New Crayons
Separate your crayons by color and place them in waxed muffin cups in each section of a muffin tin. Melt them in the oven at about 220 degrees Fahrenheit and monitor them closely. After they melt together, you will have round crayons that you can re-use.
These are great for small hands to use.
Make Sandpaper Art
Cut out a piece of sandpaper, the more coarse the better. Allow your child to draw a picture on the rough surface with leftover crayons.
Once the sandpaper is all colored, place in the oven on an old cookie sheet at low. It makes a bit of a waxy smell, but once the pictures are melted on the sandpaper, let dry and you have an art piece to cherish.
Make A Sun Catcher
Making Sun catchers has never been easier. All you need is wax paper, an iron and crayon shavings.
Note: Use a sheet of heavy foil over the wax paper when ironing so you don't smoke up the place or ruin your iron.
Take a large sheet of wax appear and fold it in half, sprinkle shavings (sparingly, they spread a lot!) over 1/2 of the sheet, then fold over & iron on medium heat - it only takes a few seconds. Allow to cool, and then cut it into shapes.
You can make wings from construction paper to make bees and butterflies. Then tape your creations onto windows for the light to shine through.
