Children's Crafts with Crayons

Crayons are for more than just coloring!

I love the end of the summer when school supplies go on sale for ridiculous prices right before school begins.  One of the great deals you can find is the crayons!  I am amused that a box of 24 always costs less than a box of 16 at this time of the year.  And for  pennies!  Buy a ton of crayons, and what you don't donate to the teachers in your school district, you can use to make oodles of fun projects and crafts with the kiddos.

Chunky Crayons

Don't throw away those broken crayons!

I found this cool post at the blog Crafty Daisies. The project isn't necessarily original (I remember making a similar project in elementary school, over 20 years ago), but I thought Candace's photos were pretty awesome (her photo is here).

There was a similar post at the blog Little Alya's Babbles, where I liked the use of the cupcake liners.

Whether you call them Rainbow Crayons, Crayon Cookies or Crayon Nibbles, the project is pretty cool - especially for smaller fingers that have an easier time with chunky crayons.

Crayola 120 ct. Crayons

So Much Fun with So Little Mess!

An anonymous reviewer writes, "Most of us grown-ups remember the thrill of getting a new box of crayons- all those beautiful sharp colors standing at attention. They even smelled good. The Giant Chest is even better, because Crayola now has more colors and gimic-crayons, while still carrying the old classics. I've bought bargain-price crayons before, but was very disappointed in the poor color quality. Not so with Crayola- the colors are bold and bright."

I love to color with crayons!

Color crayons rock!

This past week my daughter turned 7. She is the youngest of my two. While my 10 year old son used duct tape to create a calculator-pop-can-robot, my daughter opened a big Crayola creativity kit that she got from her grandparents.

You guessed it - I went right for the crayons! We spent a good chunk of time coloring pictures, and it was not only fun, but it was relaxing - a nice break from my stressful day of nursery duty at church followed by having a birthday party for 6 and 7 year olds at a noisy and chaotic family fun place.

When it was time for my daughter to go to bed, I reached into my purse for my lip balm, and discovered that she had cut out one of her pictures and placed it in my purse for me.

I tell you - color crayons rock!

Crayon Resist Painting

A bright and colorful crayon project

I remember doing this simple project as a child, and it is a fun way to spend a rainy day indoors. This craft is from the blog, Parenting Times (as is the photo).

As you can imagine, the first step is to color a simple drawing on a piece of paper. Press hard with the crayon.

Then, use watercolor paints to paint a wash of several colors over the entire paper, painting over the crayon, and then let dry!

Crayola Twistable Crayons - 30 ct.

Twistables are for Grown-Ups, too!

AZMom writes, "I'm the one who likes the Crayola Twistables! My kids prefer traditional colored pencils. I use Twistables to illustrate for work and in my journal. Crayola products render more saturated color and the leads and crayons are softer which means more color is left on the paper with less effort. As a design professional, I prefer Prismacolors for color drawing, but Twistables pack better when its time for drawing on the go, and I don't tense up as much about losing or misplacing them."

Melted Crayons - "Stained Glass" project

Another way to be crafty with crayons!

I found this blog post about a crayon Valentine's Day craft, but it can be made any time of the year. Who doesn't love hearts in August?

The gist of the project is to make crayon shavings in a desired color or colors using either a cheese grater or a crayon sharpener, then sandwich the shavings between two pieces of wax paper, then between newspaper sheets to protect the iron. On a low setting, use the iron to just melt the shavings.

Cut out 2 matching frames out of construction paper, then cut the wax paper to fit inside the frame. Glue the frames to each side of the wax paper. Punch a hole in the top and then tie a string for hanging.

Alex Stackable Finger Crayons - 30 Pieces

"Excellent Crayons"

K. Weihs wrote, "We gave these to our 22 month old son for Christmas and he did'nt want to stop playing with these crayons. He likes stacking them up 'till they fall down - and they don't break. We enjoy counting the crayons together and naming each of the colors. They're very easy and fun to hold either with your finger inside the crayon or in the palm of your hand. For the lighter colored crayons you have to press down somewhat hard to actually see the color on the paper. I like that they don't roll off the table!"
