Why Blue?

Blue is my favorite color. blue! It's soothing, comes in gorgeous shades, and does a pretty good job painting the sky, too.

I like my sky blue, my flowers blue, my blueberries blue, and my clothes blue. I'm partial to cobalt blue bottles, too. According to color experts, blue comes in an infinite number of shades. Add a little of this color and that, and you'll come up with something new. But it will still be blue.

Even if you aren't a big fan of blue, stick around. This is the first in a series of color-related lenses. Sooner or later your favorite color on the color wheel will hit center stage...and won't you be tickled pink?

Feeling Blue?

Five Ways to Paint Yourself Happy

►Count your blessings, name them one by one.

►Reach out and help somebody. Remember, blue is a state of mind, but homelessness or a sense of helplessness can be a permanent state of life for some.

►Remember that for every blue day, there comes a new dawn if you wait long enough.

►Spend time with a child. Children have a way of adding refreshment to any day.

►Remember your past, rejoice in the present, and anticipate the future. Nothing is ever as bad as it seems, and somebody out there needs you!

Reinventing Color

It's true, colors have changed in the last five decades. Think back to the house where you grew up. What did your kitchen look like? Were the appliances white...brown...gold...avocado? What was the color of your bedroom? Mine was lilac. Back then I was crazy about lilac.

While researching the science of color, I ran into a fantastic website in Flash. It's a color chart, but no ordinary color chart. Reinventing Color from the 1950's to Today is more than a trip down memory lane; it's like taking a warm bath of colored bubbles.

The site includes drawings, art, photographs, sculptures, and more--all in beautiful, bright displays of brilliant colors. (Say that ten times fast!)

Blue Delphinium

My favorite blue flower!

I grow Delphiniums in my flower garden. They grow on tall stalks and I love how the blossoms open up slowly, then last a longtime. I took this photo one July, and the deep blues make me happy. That's what blue does for me--it lifts my spirit and makes me grateful for all the beauty God put into this world of ours.

At my Etsy photography/art shop, I've added a lovely print of a Blue Delphinium. It's yours for the asking.

How Does Color Affect a Room?

If you were remodeling your kitchen, what color would you choose? Why?
Think of your last visit to a waiting room (dentist, doctor, bank, hospital...). How did the wall colors and layout make you feel?

Here are some fascinating websites about color theory and how the colors we choose for our home and office affect not only us, but everyone who walks through the door. Do you believe it?

Room Colors and How it Affects your Mood
Room color can influence our mood and our thoughts, and has the power to change the shape and size of furnishings as well as the shape and size of the room itself.

BLUE Cakes?

Remember those awful popsicles that would turn your tongue blue? We ate them because somebody out there in Popsicleland said they were good. They were a fake blueberry flavor, all sugar, tooth-rotting cold treat in the summer. Can you say d-e-n-t-i-s-t?

I've scoured the internet to gather a collection of blue cakes just for you. Not that you'll eat them, of course, but aren't they fun to look at?

Blue, Blae, or Bleu?

Blue by any other name is still...well, BLUE!

Did you know, some languages don't have a word for both green and blue. They combine the two into one word. For example, the Scots have a word for blue-grey blae. Homer of Ancient Greece described the sea as being "wine dark". There wasn't a word in those days for a clear description of sea-blue or sky-blue.

Our modern English word blue comes from Middle English, bleu or blwe, which came from an Old French word bleu of Germanic origin, blao, which translates "shining." Read more at Wikipedia. (Apparently the world has had a long-standing love affair with this color.)

I enjoy learning about word origins, but frankly don't care what we call this many-hued color. When it's attached to a perfectly beautiful outing like this scene on the Oregon coast, that's my kinda blue!
