Red, Red Everywhere!
The science of color is a fascinating topic. Color affects moods, behavior, and choices. It has the power to soothe before surgery and relax after a long, hard day. An overly bold color can also stir up anxiety.
As I planned a series of color-related lenses, I knew I would include red. I'm crazy about red, but I also like blue...yellow...and certain shades of green. Purple's not bad, either.
With Valentine's Day fast approaching, red often takes a seat front and center. The simple sight of a red heart-shaped box has the power to transport us back in time. Red is passionate, rich, and full of life.
This lens will offer plenty of reasons to add a little red to your life all year long.![]()

Color Our World Red
We're surrounded by red! Have a look around. What do you see?
I see the last red flowers of my garden. A red sunset that gradually sends fingers of hot pink drippng toward the horizon.
I see a favorite red plate that we used when our children were little, to make them feel special. It's actually called the Waechtersbach Plate. A sister-in-law gave it to us one Christmas and we used it once a week for years.
I also see a red sweater I wear at Christmas time every year, and a red pin cushion my grandma created when I was a little girl.
Red extends out into our world in so many ways. Here are a few examples.

- Ever wondered where that saying originated? Here's a Q/A to solve the mystery.
- Red Sunset

- Do bulls like red?
- Why do bulls charge when they see red? Anyone know?

Crayola's Colorful History
Check out the reds!

I loved coloring when I was a child. Nothing compared with finding a brand-new box of crayons waiting for me when I got home from school.
Nice, pointy tips. No broken crayons (yet), and...all those reds!
If you thought Crayolas came only in one shade of red, you were not choosy about the colors you chose. Check out Crayola Creativity Central, where their crayon census page takes you chronilogically through all the colors they've ever produced. Among the red-toned selections for the year I started kindergarten are these seven hues:Red Violet, Violet Red, Red, Red Orange, Violet Red, Brick Red, and Orange Red.
The Red Scarf Project
A wonderful charity project for knitters...

This Christmas, if you're safe and comfortable, clothed in warm winter clothes, thank God. Everyone doesn't have it so good, not even the basics that we often take for granted.
The Red Scarf Project was begun in 2005 to bless college-bound foster kids. It's both symbolic and practical, and makes a bold, beautiful statement: We Care! The Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) has been overwhelmed by the number of big-hearted knitters who volunteer every year for this charity initiative.
Run a Google search and you'll find blogs about it, like Now Norma Knits.

Red Hots - The Candy You Ate as a Kid
Whenever I think of the Saturday matinee, I remember my two older brothers and I walking a mile or so into town, in time to buy a box of Red Hots before the movie began. We grew up in a typical Smalltown, USA, where most people knew each other and everyone kept an eye out.
The little theater held about 150 people when packed out, and Saturday matinees were a time to see friends, escape into an adventurous movie for two hours, and of course, munch to our heart's content on our favorite treats.
What I didn't know then, though, was that Red Hots were first created in the early 1930s when my parents were kids. Follow the links below to everything Red Hots-related.
