Animal Hoarder or just a cat lover?
In times past any old widow woman who fed the neighborhood strays until she had a house full of cats was generally burned at the stake as a witch. This was even more likely if she happened to have inherited property as the last surviving heir of a man - since this allowed the authorities to confiscate that property and get it back into the hands of a man - where it belonged to their way of thinking.
We did stop burning people at the stake - mostly - a few hundred years ago. But we still tend to socially castigate the "crazy old lady down the street with all those cats".
With the interest generated by the new A&E series "Hoarders" as well as sensational cases of animal hoarding reported by news services, "crazy old cat ladies" are once again under scrutiny. But not every woman with multiple cats is a hoarder. For every animal hoarder who is causing serious problems for herself, her community, and the very animals she claims to love there are probably a few hundred true cat lovers who simply own more than a few cats. How can we tell the difference?
Animal Hoarder or Cat Lover?
What's the difference?
How do you decide if you or someone you know - or that crazy cat lady down the street - is really an animal hoarder or simply someone who loves cats? There are some very specific and easy to determine deciding factors. Learning to tell the difference is important. If someone is an animal hoarder or you suspect they could be it may be important for their health, their community, and the sake of the animals to call in the authorities. Before you make that phone call - ask yourself these questions about the situation.
Is there reason for alarm?
If you came up with a score of 80% or over on the test above, it is time to call in some help - it is very possible your cat lady is an animal hoarder.
If the score was lower maybe you should get to know your cat lady better. You might discover an interesting woman you are proud to know. Maybe you can help a bit and learn about cat rescue or breeding.
Make a friend. Careful though - she's liable to give you a cat - or two. Or three. Or...
Some interesting statistics about animal hoarders
Most are women, 46% are 60 years old or older, more than half live alone, and in 70% of cases animal urine and feces accumulate in living areas.
According to a study by Gary Patronek, PhD, director of the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine
Are they all crazy?
There are some legitimate complaints to be made regarding any person (although it is usually a woman) who feeds feral strays. There is a responsible way to do this - and an irresponsible and inconsiderate way to do this.First, let us agree that the person who feeds the cats does so from a kind and warm heart that cannot bear to think of the cats suffering and starving. This is the person who when that first cat arrives on their porch, crying and begging for food and comfort, cannot turn them away. This is not a character flaw!
In an ideal world, everyone would keep their cats as indoor pets and there would be no starving lost or feral born cats to feed. Sadly, this is not an ideal world. This is a world where, rather than socially ostracize the people who have abandoned their pets, or allowed their pets to breed irresponsibly, we ostracize and attack the people who attempt to care for the resulting problem - stray cats.
Given that this kind hearted person is going to feed and try to help those cats in any way she can - there are other issues to consider. Does she feed them, but also capture them, placing those who are suitable in good homes, providing vaccinations and spay or neuter and then if necessary a re-release of cats who are not adoptable. This is called Trap, Neuter, and Release and is, in fact, a responsible way of dealing with the stray cat problem. (see Alley Cat Allies for more information on TNR)
Before you start pointing fingers - you should visit with the person involved and find out exactly what their situation is. You may be surprised, and also get to know a person of true value and compassion.
If a person has a number of cats in their home, that does not automatically mean they are mentally ill hoarders. In the U.S. there are over 90 million pet cats living in 37.7 million households. This should tell you that most cat lovers own more than one cat. A multi-cat household is not de facto evidence of mental illness.
Now this lady has a lot of cats - is she crazy?
A sample of Hoarders
The definition of an Animal Hoarder
By definition, animal hoarders take in more animals than they are able to provide proper care for. This is a recognized mental illness and/or a symptom of other mental illnesses such as OCD.
Animal hoarding involves keeping higher than usual numbers of animals as pets without having the ability to properly house or care for them, while at the same time denying this inability. Compulsive hoarding can be characterized as a symptom of mental disorder rather than deliberate cruelty towards animals. Hoarders are deeply attached to their pets and find it extremely difficult to let the pets go. They typically cannot comprehend that they are harming their pets by failing to provide them with proper care. Hoarders tend to believe that they provide the right amount of care for their pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides a "Hoarding Prevention Team", which works with hoarders to help them attain a manageable and healthy number of pets.
What's one more cat?

My bed used to look just like that when I laid down in it. I have to say, that at some point when the latest little child turns up on your porch with a sick kitten in hand, in tears, begging you to help it because they just found it and they can't keep it in their apartment - you look down at the 15 or 20 cats around your feet and shrug and say "What's one more cat."
I beg you to notice that although there are a lot of cats here, they are all sleek, fat and healthy in appearance. I think this person is just a cat lover.
Hoarder or cat lover - what do you think?

More about animal care
I have been involved in animal care, professionally or as a loving owner most of my life. For almost a year I was an Animal Control officer. I've been a stable hand, kennel help, pet care technician or whatever the current terms are for the friendly pooper scooper in your animal facility. I know animals, and I know the people who love them. So naturally, I've written a lot of lenses about animals. Here are just a few.-

- Another excellent lens. I have a house full of cats, have a FIV Cat Rescue, feed (and do TNR) for feral cats near my home and in general love, love, love cats. I'm getting older so I'm sure people will start calling me the crazy cat lady, however, I prefer Cat-Woman (www.squidoo.com/cat-woman)! Thanks for pulling this lens together. Bear hugs and purrs, Frankster
