How to make the BEST Mac N Cheese-Ever!

Macaroni and cheese is a dish served year round. It is a favorite of millions of people and there are very few who have never tried this taste sensation. It is served in homes across the nation and many add their own special touches to add their own signature to the all time classic.

We serve it so much here that we have pre-made packets ready so putting the dish together is a breeze and takes no time at all. You may want to consider doing this too. A little preparation before hand makes macaroni and cheese a much more do-able dish, any night of the week!

Macaroni and Cheese Ingredients

What you need for macaroni and cheese

1 box shell or elbow macaroni
1/2 of a 3 lb. chub of Velveeta Cheese- cubed
2-4 TBS Cream Cheese (reg or low fat)-cubed
1/3 tsp. each salt and pepper
4 oz. crushed potato chips (optional)

Boil the macaroni according to the directions, drain and return to pan. Add cubed velveeta and cream cheese, stirring until melted. At this point, do a taste test. You may or may not want to add the salt. It is a personal choice on how you like it to taste. If you would like the macaroni and cheese extra creamy, you can add some milk until it is the desired consistency. The mac and cheese can be served at this point or put into a casserole dish and covered with dots of butter/margarine and the crushed potato chips, and baked for about 15 minutes.

Adding to the Mac N Cheese recipe

This recipe is fantastic for get togethers, pot-lucks and other gatherings. You will want to double or even triple the ingredients given to make enough to keep everyone happy. There are also many things you can add to make this recipe a meal in itself. Simply by adding some meat and/or vegetables, you can have a delicious meal in a short amount of time Here are some items I like to add on different occasions:

  • Tuna

  • Cubed Ham

  • Chicken (canned or cubed)

  • Ground beef

  • Canned Salmon

  • Peas

  • Brocolli

  • Left over cubed beef roast or steak

Really, the possibilities are endless. If you want to experiment a little (which is what I do) you can always add a variety of other cheeses into the mix. Maybe some shredded Mozzerella (and then add some pepperoni) or some sharp cheddar, for example.

Save time preparing Macaroni and cheese

get your ingredients ready

A quick way to stay ahead of the game is to prepare your mac n cheese packets right when you bring the ingredients home from the store. Grab the velveeta (or other cheese chub), cream cheese and any other cheeses you want to try. Cube them and add the right amount of each into a plastic bag to be frozen or refrigerated until you are ready to use it. This save a lot of preparation time and makes macaroni and cheese even easier to make.
*Hint: You can also use these prepared plastic bags to add to boxed macaroni and cheese to add to the flavor and appeal!

Oh yeah! My favorite Mac N Cheese uses a thick white sauce to which I add grated cheddar to make a really thick and gooey sauce. Then I like to use other flavorful hard cheeses sprinkled on top and baked a bit so the top cheese gets melty and sometimes a bit on the crunchy side. If I'm feeling really "Betty Crocker" LOL I would put something crunchy on top like seasoned bread crumbs or crushed chips, but I'm usually content with just the extra cheese.

If there's ever any left over, I love to scramble eggs and then mix in the mac n cheese until it's hot. Oh, great. Now I'm hungry for Mac n Cheese. Go figure.
