Very simliar to the French pomme dauphinois which is thinly sliced potatoes layered and eac layer sprinked with finely pressed garlic and seasoned. Pour over cream, I use creme fraiche, sprinkle with nutmeg and cook in the oven until the potatoes are cooked and the top brown. Cheese is not usually added to a traditional dauphinois.

This is the first time I've seen chicken broth in a scalloped potato recipe. Going to give that a try next time I roast a chicken and render some broth. Sounds fabulous, and we do love them here. Your suggestion to use Yukon golds is helpful too, because I find they cook tender much more quickly than some of the more utilitarian potatoes. Don't you?
  • allcutestuff Jul 28, 2011 @ 3:23 am | delete
I need to try these. looks really good
  • TravelingRae Jul 3, 2011 @ 4:55 pm | delete
My dad's scalloped potatoes relied on an onion, salt, and pepper for flavour and he only used milk. I bet yours are a lot richer! I'm not that fond of potatoes, but I'm going to try making scalloped ones with Yukon golds if I can find them.
  • MaxReily Jun 26, 2011 @ 5:43 pm | delete
Yes, I am! I love recipe lenses, and you have so many great looking ones. I need to come back and read every one! This recipe looks like it would be delicious--can't wait to try it.

Love scalloped taters, but I don't eat them often because of the ol' watching the waistline thing. But I've actually been thinking I should make them because they're one of my man's favorite foods. I'll use your recipe, actually. Thanks!

This recipe says to remove the foil in 45 mins then baste the potatoes. What are you basting the potatoes with? We are making them tonight...but not sure about the basting part of this recipe.
    They do sound wonderful!!
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Jan 1, 2011 @ 9:04 pm | delete
Hi, Debbie ~ I'm sorry I could not get back to answer your question sooner. Squidoo (the platform I wrote this page on) was down at the worst possible moment! Anyway, to answer your question baste should have read bake. I often do give them a stir at the this point, too. Sorry for my error; hope your potatoes turned out well.

Hi Brenda -- this is a particular favorite of mine evoking memories of childhood with the creamiest of HOMEMADE potatoes -- back then in the dark ages, I don't believe you got these in a package. I'd have to research the history on that to be sure. So, I've noticed that you've added 'best-ever' to your recipe lenses. What a great idea! ;)
  • alteredkat May 2, 2009 @ 11:16 am | delete

Thank you so much for blessing my Lost Theories lens Brenda! Maybe if you have the time you'll want to start over and begin with watching season one, Lost is so great and the theories make it even better. At least that's what I think. Of course I know there are many people who just watch the show and never bother about the many backgrounds. Thanks again!
