How to Create a Contest on Squidoo

Ranked #1,006 in Squidoo Community, #103,695 overall | Donates to FIV Cat Rescue

Learn the 6 steps to create and run a successful contest on Squidoo to make money for charity or yourself!

Want to learn how to to raise money for your favorite charity or increase your income, or both? Many lensmasters, myself included, use contests to do just that. I'll show you how.

I'll give you complete instructions on how to create a contest on Squidoo. You'll learn everything from A to Z including planning your contest; creating the lens; prizes and award; getting contest entries; promoting both on Squidoo and off Squidoo; and how to run the contest!

The main purpose of this lens is to show a contest where a lens is created specifically to run a contest. However, I'll also show examples of lenses where contests were run as just a segment within a lens.

I'll add ideas and examples frequently, so come back before you create your next contest for more ideas!

#1 Reason to hold a Contest

The #1 reason to create a contest is to raise awareness and money for charity.

In my opinion, Squidoo is the penultimate way for charities to increase awareness about their cause, raise money, get more members and even increase member involvement.

People can donate (painlessly & effortlessly) to a charity of their choice. ANYONE can set up a "lens" about ANYTHING (for FREE) and have the royalties earned by the lens automatically paid to their charity. They can donate any portion of the royalties too. They choose the amount. Can you imagine what just 1,000 or 10,000 people with a lens making just $10/each a month could do for your favorite charity, month in and month out?

Want to help a charity? Then create a contest to build lenses for it. Won't that feel good?

6 Steps to Creating a successful Contest on Squidoo-- The Overview

Here are 6 steps to creating a successful contest on Squidoo. Each step is hot-linked to the details further down the page.

Step 1: Define Purpose

Step 2: Plan It

Step 3: Create the Contest lens

Step 4: Promote the contest

Step 5: Run the contest

Step 6: Announce the winners

Step 1: Define Purpose

Step 1: PURPOSE of the contest

The first step is to refine your purpose for having a contest. Take a blank piece of paper and write down 1 simple sentence that describes your purpose for holding a contest. For instance the purpose of my Challenge for Animals contest was...

Example Purpose:

A contest to help raise awareness and money
for 7 small animal rescue charities.

With this clearly written purpose, it was easy to figure out how to approach the rest of steps. I also used it in the introduction of the contest lens itself and in recruiting people to make lenses and in promotions. In my mind, it is the single most important thing you can do to make it all happen.

The magic is in the purpose!

Step 2: Plan It

Step 2: PLAN the contest

"If you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you get there?"

Don't even think about skipping this step. Planning is essential to creating and running a successful contest. So, before you even get the url for your Squidoo contest lens, you need to do some planning and make some decisions. See Planning check-list below.

Step 2: Contest Planning Check-list

Here is a check list to help you plan your contest. You may not need to do everything on the list for your particular type of contest, but they may give your some additional ideas which could make your contest better.
  1. With your purpose in mind, you can choose your url using the strongest keyword(s)that people would search for. For example for this lens I've use www.squidoo/create-a-contest because it explains exactly what this lens is about and when I checked Squidholic and did the Googlebattle for keywords this pulled best.
  2. If you are creating a contest for charity, pick the Charity or Charities you want to raise awareness and funds for from this lens: Squidoo Non-profit partners. You could create a lens for a charity that is not on the list, but picking one on the list lets Squidoo do the bookkeeping for you (tracking royalties).
  3. Figure of how the contest works -- that means how you explain it to the readers. How they will submit their entry into the contest. Are they submitting a lens into a plexo (see example at: Contest Entry module.

Maybe they submitting a Caption for a photo. (see example at: .
  4. Decide on the rules: Yep, you need rules. For instance, what are the start and end dates for the contest? Who can enter? What can they enter? Who can vote - any visitors or only Squidoo members? See example at The Rules
  5. Determine prizes (if any). Not everyone is interested in a prize, but having prizes, badges, buttons or just a list of "champions for charity" or "wall of fame" on the lens is a great. Whatever you decide, since this is a contest, you need to have a text/write module for The Prizes

Prize Selection

A nice added benefit for Lensmasters who join the contest

Many lensmasters, who are creating lenses for charity, do not care if there are prizes or not. However, I believe that some type of recognition is welcomed and in my opinion warranted.

We always hear about the spammers and the "bad" folks around. Here we have a chance to recognize and spread the word that there are wonderful folks doing neat things.

Besides some of the prizes or incentives could end up increasing the traffic to the participants lenses, therefore, raising more awareness and money for their charity and/or themselves.

Everybody wins!

The following badges were created specifically for the SquidActivists October Challenge for Animals by ComfortDoc, an incredibly giving Lensmaster.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place get their own badge and all of the other contestants get a badge too. The idea is that the contestants post the badge on the winning or competing lens linking back to the contest lens.

Prize ideas for your contests

Vote for your favorite prize idea(s). If you don't see it, then add your idea. Don't forget to vote for it.

Step 3: Create The Contest Lens

Step 3: Create the Contest Lens

  1. Pick the url that is the best keyword(s) that people would use to find you on the search engines.
  2. Pick the photo for your intro module.
cubpaw-hand.jpgThe photo should be one that is a good representation of purpose of your contest.

Here's the photo I used for the Animal Contest was I feel is perfect. I wanted to show a person helping or rescuing an animal.

The hand holding the small paw of a sloth bear seemed to show the emotion and point I wanted to get across in the contest -- we can all make a difference in the lives of animals and these 7 charities are. Won't you help them?
  3. IF you are doing the contest for charity, then create a module that lists the charity or charities and tell abouttheir work. Make it interesting and appealing.
  4. Create a module for the "How the Contest Works" or another title.
  5. Create a module for the "The Contest Rules". Here's where you spell out the dates, who can enter, etc.
  6. Create a module for "The Prizes". Even if you decide you don't need prizes, tell the potential contest participants just what they will get -- a prize, a badge, a link to their site, a warm feeling, whatever.
  7. Have a count down module for your contest end-date or deadline. This may help to motivate people to hurry up and enter.
  8. Create the ENTER THE CONTEST module -- if you're asking people for more than just their lens url, then the Guestbook module works well.
  9. Create the WALL OF FAME module using the Featured Lensmasters module if you want to recognize the Lensmasters themselves.

Step 5: Run the Contest

Running the contest

Running the contest simply means doing whatever it takes to keep the contest lens updated. For instance during the contest, you need to add the new lenses to the appropriate plexo and any other places info should be put. For instance, in the Animal contest, here's what I had:

1. A ENTER THE CONTEST HERE using a Guestbook module. For instance, in the case of the animal contest, I had 2 plexos for lenses depending on the criteria.

2. I also had a KEEPING SCORE... to show readers what lenses donated to which charities. It was created using a TextWrite module.

3. And, I added the lensmaster to the WALL OF FAME which was done using a Featured Lensmaster module.

Step 6: Announce the winner(s)

Group Lenses Created for Contests

Creating a new group for a contest may be a good way to get more participation and it gives everyone in the contest another link.

However, there may already be an appropriate group lens. For instance, when I run another animal charity contest, I will use the same group Squidoo Activist's Animal Charities for the lenses that donate 100% to the animal charities, but I may create another one for the lenses donating less or find one(s) that are already created and let folks know them.

Featured Contest Group Lenses

These are groups that were created specifically for a contest but continue to add new members after the contest ends.
