Legend Of The Christmas Stocking
Hanging stockings was a tradition born in third-century Myra, a port in Asia Minor. Here the beloved bishop St. Nicholas performed numerous miracles. The legend states that St. Nicholas learned of three sisters who had no money for a dowry, and that a less than desirable occupation was imminent for the sisters unless their income improved. Upon hearing of this dour predicament the generous St.Nicholas tossed a sack of gold through their window during the evening hours. It was enough money for the oldest sister's dowry. The next evening he dropped a second bag of gold for the middle sister. Must of been a chilly evening for on the third night he found the window closed. Improvising, the kind and generous St Nicholas dropped the gold for the third sister down the chimney. The coins fell into a stocking that happened to be hung by the chimney to dry. My oh my did this fellow have good aim. Word of this miracle soon spread and the townspeople everywhere began hanging their stockings by the chimney in hopes of catching some of St. Nicholas' benevolence.
