How To Create Your Own Christmas and Holiday Art Cards

4 Easy Ways To Create Your Own Unique Christmas And Holiday Cards

Fleece On Earth Wild Faces Gallery Christmas Card Image 2009

When I was younger it was a local tradition with my family and friends that every year for the holidays we'd all create a new Christmas ornament and then gift them to each other. The result was a lovely tree filled with lots of memories. Unfortunately as my art business took off I had very little time left for creating ornaments. But still wanting to keep up the tradition I started making a new unique holiday card design to send to friends and families.

I know when I get handmade cards from people I always cherish them and keep them. So I thought I'd share a few of the various way you can make your own one of a kind Christmas cards. One of the best things about making these kinds of cards is that they are suitable to be kept as a keepsake for can be framed when the holiday is past.

The 4 Easy Ways To Create Your Unique Design Are:
1. Reprint artwork specifically created for a new holiday design.
2. Paint a quick and easy design on each card
3. Have an outline printed and then paint making each one a unique original work of art.
4. Photography Art Cards

Of course these techniques don't have to be for Christmas exclusively, it just happens to be the one holiday I do make cards for every year. But go ahead and experiment and let your creativity run wild.

Use Your Artwork And Then Print Your Own Holiday & Christmas Card

Use Your Inkjet Printer To Create Your Own Christmas & Holiday Art Cards

This is actually what I do for my cards every year. It works well for because because I am an artist surviving off my art business and so I can still sell the painting. Plus we do all our own giclee printing so we have scans and files readily available. However it is still a simple enough process to scan or photograph your art at a high resolution.

Reprinting my art into notecards means I can put a lot more effort into the artwork.

Since I am a critter painter my Christmas cards have been animal in nature with most of them being either sheep or horses. Though I have had a polar bear and wolf images also.

Steps For Creating Your Own Art To Reprint
1. Create the art using whatever medium you prefer.
2. Create a digital file either by scanning or photographing.
3. Adjust image in Photoshop or similar application to resemble the original work.
4. Create message for interior or back of card.
5. Print.

Note: Be sure your printer can handle heavier weight cardstock. Not all inkjet printers can

Use Watercolor Gel Medium For Adding Dimension And Sparkle To Your Holiday Art Cards

Linda occasionally adds a lovely detail of sparkling snow. (See above photo)

Using Gel medium and glitter:
* After you have finished your watercolor painting and it has dried, apply the watercolor gel medium to the areas you wish to add sparkle and dimension.. The gel medium not only provides a surface for the glitter to adhere to but it also creates a more dimensional effect.

* Then promptly apply the glitter while the gel medium is still wet. Linda prefers to use a very fine glitter to achieve a more realistic sparkle.

*Then shake off the excess glitter and wait for them to dry.

Note: glitter is a messy substance and tends to get every where. It may be helpful to this this in an area where there is easy cleanup or where a little extra sparkle is not a problem.

This is something best done on watercolor paper again. It's kind of a cross between the first and second way to make your own art cards.

How To Create This Type Of Art Card
* Draw the outline of the image in either pencil or ink.
* Create a digital file.
* Reprint onto watercolor paper or watercolor card stock using permanent inks.
* And then apply the color on each cards.

This process saves time when using a more complex image and yet the end is result is till a one of a kind original artistic creations.

NOTE: Be sure the inks used in the printing are permanent or else the ink will run when apply the watercolor paint over the top.
