Design Your Own Superhero
This lens provides tools to help you create your superhero's personality, design a costume, determine special powers and abilities -- everything you need to design the hero of your dreams (or the villain of your nightmares). Need help picking a name? Finding a special weapon or super-gadget? There are tools to help. Within this lens you'll also find links to some wonderfully comprehensive sites about comic books and their creators as well as information on huge array of superheroes you probably never knew existed.
Define Your Superhero
Determine Personality, Powers, and More
Who is your superhero? Is he human or alien? Is she an Amazonian warrior princess or a tiny sprite? Perhaps your superhero is really a super VILLAIN. Are his powers those of superior strength and heightened senses? Or is she a teenage girl, able to vanquish enemies with a wave of her special cell phone (as long as she remembered to charge it the night before)? What powers will you assign to your hero? What special physical features, or unique weaknesses? Most importantly, what will you name your superhero?
These tools can help you decide.
Seventh Sanctum: This awesome site is crammed with generator tools to help you create every last detail about your superhero (and many other types of characters and plots as well). Name villains, elves, anime characters, pseudo historical figures and more. then cruise to the many tools for describing weaponry, powers, vehicles, and many other variables. Get a short -- or long -- character synopsis, create animal characters and familiars. The possibilities are endless as is the enjoyment to be derived.
Lee's Useless Super-Hero Generator: An all-in-one tool that allows you to set a variety of options and then cranks out a name, powers and power source, special weapons, etc. Very good for generating ideas and you may have it generate 1 or many options from a single set of settings. Once the list is created, feel free to mix and match names and powers to create the perfect combination for your purposes. I discovered some surprisingly good combinations when I experimented with it. There are options for heroes, villains, and teams.
Dress Your Superhero
Human or alien, all buffed up or kind of dweeby, big and beefy or a tiny sprite, 2 eyes or 6 -- the decision is yours. Clothe him in spandex or swathe her in filmy fabric. Give them wings and tails or spiked boots and electric auras. The interactive tools described below will let you exercise as much (or as little) control as you wish to have. There are even a couple that wil work for kids or their considerbly less techo parents. In either event, only you will know which tool you use to create your spectacular results.- HeroMachine 2.5: This robust tool allows control of everything, including separate settings for right and left sides and over and under clothing layers. Lots of fun. HUGE time suck. You might also want to try Zombie Creator and the alpha version of the next generation of this tool HeroMachine 3.0.
- Fa'brica de Hero'is: This site is in Portuguese but after selecting your body type and reach the creation page, click on the U.S. flag at the top (where it says "Idioma") to change to English. The tool is pretty intuitive, even in Portuguese. A lot of nice options in this one.
- Super Hero Dress Up Game
Change headgear, top, bottom, insignia, gloves, boots, belts. About 9 options for each item, and about 10 color variations. Simple and quick. Not a lot of scope for creativity but will get you a reasonable figure quickly. Simple enough for kids. - Heroine
This has a limited number of options, many of which are fairy tale motifs. It's a great way to introduce younger girls to the world of superheroes.
What Not to Wear: Superheroes
Superhero Makeovers
What Not to Wear: Superheroes is a fabulous site that critiques the costumes of superheroes and villains and then suggests alternatives. I guess you could call it Extreme Makeover: Superhero Edition. Really worth a look and a read. Give yourself lots of time.

Quiz: Which Superhero Are You?
Which Superhero Are You?
This quiz has 47 questions, not just the usual 5 or 6. I ended up as Spiderman, but I probably wouldn't have if they'd asked about fear of heights.

Learn About Superheroes
Some of the Information May Surprise You
- Comic Vine
- This site bills itself as "the world's largest comic book encyclopedia and community." I have no trouble believing this. It lists characters, powers, creators, publishers, story arcs and more -- and everything isl searchable and sortable. Included are many, many images of comic book covers -- including a lot of arcane ones. I am not a collector of comic books but I found this site fascinating and spent quite a lot of time exploring its offerings.
- Superhero Database
- Included in the information on this comprehensive site is:
- a list of superheroes and villains sortable by gender or side. Each link is to a page detailing the character's powers, origin, history, affiliation, physical description, and image.
- a similar list of superhero and villain teams (published and unpublished)
- a list of superpowers. Links to a page for each power which includes names of all characters who possess that power.
- a list of superheroes and villains sortable by gender or side. Each link is to a page detailing the character's powers, origin, history, affiliation, physical description, and image.
- Museum of Black Superheroes
- This Intriguing site showcases (obviously) black superheroes. The list is considerably longer and more varied than I would have expected. The stories and backgrounds are fascinating. While it's not all that surprising that the majority of the black superheroes originated within the last 20 years, their existence from as early as the 1940s is. Reading about some of the early characters, it seems apparent that some "hiding" may have taken place due to contemporary attitudes that today, mercifully, are unacceptable.
. - Legion of Net.Heroes
- This group describes itself as "a superhero-parody, Internet-parody shared creative writing universe. It features stories that are silly, serious, comic, tragic, lyrical, or simply strange." In addition to a vast archive on the original LNH home page. Don't expect bells and whistles on this site. The LNH is a genuine piece of Internet history. It began in 1992 in the rec.arts.comics usenet group and the "Looniverse" has been expanding ever since. This site is a real window into the early days of the Internet, since much of it is in a format that attests to pre-graphic origins. Therefore, most of the "comics" are narrative rather than pictorial. Who could resist such iconic heroes as Limp Asparagus Lad, Cliche Dude, and Bad Timing Boy? Not to mention Catalyst Lass, Cheesecake-Eater Lad, and Multi-tasking Man? There is a more current graphic Legion of Net.Heroes: Web Comic.
- Comic-Con
- Information about the San Diego Comic-Con, including full details upcoming convention and information about future ones.

Superheroes Dipped in Chocolate
As if being a Superhero wasn't tasty enough, the people at the annual New York Chocolate Fashion Show took things a step further and featured designer superhero ensembles made from chocolate. Read the full story and watch some of the runway show. The costumes are delicious, but chocolate is pretty heavy, so they really should only be worn by Superheroes with super-strength.

- Great lens! My second oldest son thinks he's a superhero and has tried to fly a couple of times. I always grow concerned whenever he puts on his cape.
