How To Create a Successful Landing Page

A landing page is the first page that a user sees when clicking on a link to go to a website or a specific page within the web site. All successful marketers use them. These are usually sales pages and/or opt-in pages. A landing page is not the undifferentiated and unfocused home page. These are specifically used for capturing leads and making sales of a product.

Often they are called a "squeeze page" or "lead capture page". However, a squeeze page is usually a smaller type of landing page, which will have an opt-in form in sight when the page loads. These pages have one goal in mind; get the visitor to become a buyer or subscriber.

Landing Page System

The landing page is the first page in a landing page system where it starts a chain of events where you can derive multiple streams of profit. For example:
1. Visitor visits landing page
2. Landing page make one time offer
3. Visitor opts-in or purchases
4. Thank You page is displayed
a. product delivered or confirmation on opt-in
b. makes offer for new product
c. requests to subscribe to mailing list
5. Cycle repeats

Before You Start

There are a few things that you will need before you get started building your landing page. Here are some of the most important:
1. You must have a domain and web hosting service. (I use godaddy.com to acquire my domains and bluehost.com for my web hosting.)
2. You will need an auto responder. There are many good ones out there but I use aweber.com
3. You will need a product to offer or make your own.
4. You must have a check a service. Some good ones are: Paypal, Click Bank, and 2 Check Out. There are others but these are the ones I am familiar with.
5. If you are doing the web designs yourself you will need web design software. If you are not a designer, there are many people in this business that want your business.
6. You will probably also need some sort of graphic software. (A low cost solution is Photoshop Elements.)

Planning Your Theme

Probably the most important aspect of your page is the theme. How you plan to generate traffic to your landing page will greatly determine the content.

If working with search engine optimization, planning your theme will entail finding phrases within your niche which have a high demand and a low supply of competing sites and then incorporating these phrases within your page. Be sure to tune the page to a specific audience.

The same holds true if you are planning to use Pay Per Click (PPC) programs such as Adwords in Google. You should consider creating separate pages for the different keywords that you are purchasing.

Writing a Landing Page That Converts

Most people have no idea on how to write a landing page that converts. It is important to have mix of compelling sales point with powerful psychological triggers. For instance; you need to build up the hype but also explain why your product is going to provide the solution. When doing this you also need to include psychological triggers such as "scientifically proven," "guaranteed," and "shocking". You get the idea%u2026 You want the reader to feel compelled to continue reading.

You sales pages must have coherency and direction. You need the page to look professional and slowly grind down the visitor's resistance to the sale, to the point where he/she will pull their credit card on the spot and make the purchase. One way to do this is by urging the visitor to make the purchase in multiple places in the sales page.

Squeeze pages are usually a little easier to get people to convert. On these you want to state the benefits for them on joining your mailing list and explain that under no circumstances will you spam them, sell or give out their name and email address.

Tips on Increasing the Conversion Rates

There are three major ways in which you can increase your conversion rate.

1. Personalization - Provide a photo of yourself and add a signature at the bottom of the page.
2. Black and White Text - Regardless of what anyone tells you, this is one of the easiest ways in which to make your page look professional.
3. Free - Offering something for free. This is usually done on the sales page.

If you are using PayPal some other checkout program; clearly state that they may return the product within a reasonable time frame. What you are attempting to do is build the visitor's trust of you. Gaining their trust will go a long ways toward them subscribing to your email lists and purchasing your products. Following the above should greatly improve your conversion rates.

Remember that creating a landing page is concentrating on a single goal of getting visitors to be subscribers or purchasers. These pages consist of opt-in forms, introductions, pictures of product and/or owner, and calls to action. And last and probably most important, these pages must be focused.
