Create Videos to Promote Your Online Business

This lens explains easy ways to create marketing videos for YouTube and other online video directories.

There are three different kinds of marketing video we'll be looking at here.

1. Full motion video

These are videos made with a camera. The simplest method is just pointing a camera at your face and talking about your product.

2. Animated photographs

These are made with photographs, animated with an editing program to add some movement and excitement.

 3. Screen Capture Videos

Screen capture software lets you record whatever you do on your computer screen to a video file. This is a great way to make training videos.

We'll be looking at ways to make these kinds of videos in some detail.

What can you do with videos?

  • Give them away in exchange for a newsletter signup
  • Sell them as a product
  • Publish them on YouTube or Google Video

One of the quickest ways to get your marketing video done is by setting up a camcorder and shooting yourself talking about your product. This is really quick and easy, because you don't need to spend hours putting it together.

Most modern digital camcorders have a IEEE-1394 (also known as Firewire or iLink) port. You'll need a matching port on your computer so that you can capture the video directly from the camcorder. (You can of course shoot the video to tape and upload it later).

Microsoft Windows XP SP2 comes with Movie Maker, a simple video editing package. This program allows you to capture video, and of course edit it afterwards. You can add titles, background music, transitions and video effects.

If you need more flexibility and control, you can try Sony Vegas Movie Studio. At around $90, this is a real bargain. It offers a powerful but easy to use editing environment. There are built-in "Show Me How" tutorials, which are really useful.

Videos using animated photos are easy to make, but are usually more time-consuming than simple live-action videos.

You'll need a good video editing program. Ideally, you need a program which allows you to animate a still picture by zooming in and out and moving around within the image. This is sometimes called the "Ken Burns effect", after the documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, who used the process extensively.

If you have a Mac, you probably have iMovie. This program offers everything you need to make terrific videos.

If you're using a Windows PC, you can use the Windows Movie Maker software. It lets you do very simple slow zooms in and out, but that's it.
A better idea is to download Microsoft Photo Story, a freeware program which lets you manipulate images easily.

Screen Capture videos

Here's a screen capture video which shows how to get and use CamStudio.

Screen capture videos are effective when you want to demonstrate how to use a product, or anything you can do on your computer screen. Powerpoint slides can be particularly effective.
There are a number of screen capture programs available. You can start out with the Open Source program CamStudio. Camstudio is excellent for the price (it's free), but it doesn't have the features of the industry standard product, Camtasia Studio.

You can download Camtasia Studio for a free 30-day trial, which should be enough time to create a couple of products if you plan them properly.
