How to create a wordpress theme

So you want to create a wordpress theme instead of using ready-made themes and now you want to know how. I'll break it down to you and provide links to resources that will help you through this process.

Basic steps to create a wordpress theme

not all steps are required, but recommended

  1. Plan properly

Find a good resource for common design problems and their solutions.

Then grab some books for creating a wordpress theme,

  2. Figure out what you want the theme to do.

Not all themes do the same thing, some themes give you fuzzy feelings and some make you angry. Decide in the beginning what it is that you want the theme to do and you will have a much easier time planning and working on it in the future.

  3. What emotion do you want the blog design to evoke?

Then find colors that work towards this goal. Check out my squidoo page on building a better blog design for resources on color and other important areas to blog designs.
  4. What can you do better?

If you create a wordpress theme, do not just slap one together that does the same thing as thousands of others. Improve upon the basic blog design and add things that will make it more useful design wise.

  5. Who are your visitors?

If you don't know who you want to attract with your blog design, then you might end up putting on the wrong suit for your blog. A pink tuxedo might work with your friends, but it doesn't impress anyone at a business meeting. It is all about context, do some research on your visitors.
