Creating A Focal Point In Any Room

Ranked #50,192 in Home & Garden, #814,321 overall

Decorating Around Specific Items

If you look around your room, you may see that there is nothing on one of your walls or what is there looks to plain and dreary. You need to recreate a look on that wall that will have everyone who enters into the room talking about how you do a good job decorating.

A focal point can be as simple as a lampshade or as large as an entire wall. So how do you know what to make as your focal point? If you find something while you are out that really attracts your attention either by the color or the design, you can take that back home and place it in your room and create a look around it. Your focal point can be any color you want it to be.

Sketching A Design

You may have some simple wall art to hang up but it's not really calling out anything. Take those pictures off and recreate the look of that wall by adding pictures of different shapes, colors, and sizes. Before you begin, you may want to reach for a piece of paper and a pencil and create a look that you like on paper. Seeing it on paper will give you more of an idea on whether you like something or not once it is done. Whenever you are creating a look on the wall, consider completing the look with track lighting so you can highlight your pictures.

If the sofa style is what you like but it is showing wear and tear then consider giving your sofa a new look so it can become the focal point in the room. To recreate a look for your sofa, try a simple slipcover in a color that you like the most. You will want to bring the thickness of the cushions back to the original thickness by stuffing them again with fresh stuffing or foam before you place the slipcover on it. Now you can accessorize the look of your sofa by accenting it with the right coffee table. If you have a contemporary looking sofa then you want that style of coffee table.

Area Rugs Are Perfect Accessories

Area rugs are another great way of creating a focal point to any room. The variety of modern rugs, sisal rugs, green rugs, tropical rugs, oriental rugs is huge and you will definitely be able to find one to suit your décor. If you have a large room, placing an oval rug with a central motif, like the one in the Whitehouse, will definitely make that a focal point and impress your guests. You can also place a square rug or rectangular braided rug under your furniture to create an "island" effect which is a great place to socialize when you have friends come visit.

Window Dressing

Modern Area RugDressing up a window is very important to do. The window can be the focal point or it can be the accessory. In order to make it your focal point, try placing a curtain that attracts your attention. It may be a neutral color like cream or beige. It may also be a brighter color like blue, green, or yellow. The material you choose from your curtain plays an important role in the look. You may want to use a sheer curtain that is see through or you can use a muslin cotton material that is still light but it is more solid than the see through sheer.

Don't set any knick-knacks or hang a wind chime or sun catcher in the window, as it will take away from being your focal point. Keep the focal point simple and the rest of the room will balance out.
