Traditional christmas decor

Traditional Christmas décor is something that has been around for generations with very little change. The brilliant lights on a tall evergreen tree, the ornaments of red and green, and a beautiful tree topper featuring a star or an elegant Angel, all are part of the traditions in homes around the world. From the old world tradition of hand strung popcorn garlands, and the beloved tradition of children cutting out rings of colorful paper to create garlands of glitter covered interlocking pieces, and snowflakes made from paper plate cutouts, families have wonderful memories associated with the traditions' of generations.

The Traditional Christmas Tree

Christmas tree hunting has always been the favorite subject of the Holiday Season. Cutting down the fresh scented trees can be now done quite easily with the availability of tree farms. Purchasing a tree from a charity can also be beneficial to a cause close to your heart and allow the modern version of tree hunting to be a part of your Seasonal traditions. Using a quality artificial tree can be beautiful and economic, and a way to avoid the mess real evergreens can cause, and they have no need of being watered to prevent drying out. The type of Christmas tree you decide on will be based on personal choice of real or artificial, the room you will place the tree in, and the choice of flocking you prefer. A large room needs a big, full Christmas tree. You can place the tree in a window for displaying or in the center of a room when space is available. Covered with handmade ornaments and garland a traditional décor is easily achieved. Place the tree atop a braided area rug in cranberry or green can provide easy clean-up after Christmas. Using lots of tiny white lights can replace the hazardous tradition of burning candles on a Christmas tree, and offer the same warm affect.

Traditional Color Schemes

The favorite all time colors at Christmas time have always been red, green, gold, and silver. Their glittering brightness brings cheer to any room. From the textiles used in our homes to the foods we serve, all of these traditional décor colors fill the Holidays. With the availability of near by home supply stores that feature entire sections devoted to Christmas, finding items will not be a problem when you choose to decorate using traditional Christmas décor. Area rugs featuring Christmas prints, and characters from books, movies, and myths are readily available and can add charm to any room. An oval area rug featuring the entwined colors in a modern motif can add flair to a hallway. Small rugs of forest green or bright gold and silver can be added to a bathroom to add warmth and a touch of the Season to a usually neglected room's seasonal décor. Fill your rooms with touches of silver and gold to add a rich flavor amongst the jeweled toned reds and greens.

Traditional Decorative Touches

Using small sleighs to display gaily wrapped packages from family members has long been a family tradition in the South. Each family member draws a name and is required to purchase a small gift for another. These are placed in a sleigh and opened on Christmas Eve after a special dinner filled with laughter and memories of Christmas past. It serves to whet the appetite for Christmas morning, and provides a distraction for younger members of the family. Sleighs are usually placed on a Christmas themed area rug in a central location, so everyone can watch as the gifts appear daily, and sneak a shake of the one bearing their name!
Other traditional touches include the displaying of ornament collections from years past, the Nativity Scene placed over the mantel, and the wonderful tradition of a candy filled Advent Calendar. These traditional Christmas décor items have generations of families tied in with their usage. Many are handed down for hundreds of years from Mother to Daughter.
Take the time this Holiday Season and bring in a few traditional Christmas décor touches, and perhaps begin a tradition for your family to pass on.
