Creating a Room with a View

Stare Out an Open Window--enjoy the view!

The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in NYC had an exhibition titled "Rooms with a View: The Open Window in the 19th Century". This exhibition celebrated one of life's pleasures: staring out an open window.

How many times have you requested a room with a view when going on a vacation. I can tell you that when I moved to Denver, I combed the real estate ads for homes or apartments that had a "view".

Since that time I have learned that I can create my own view and change it if I want. Here is how you and I can have our own room with a view "at will".

The view above, Window Looking out at a Tuscan Vineyard is available on Allposters.com. It already has a window "built" in!

Want To Build Your Own Window With A View?

Here's how:

Open window with a view--let in the fresh air--available at allposters.comFirst, you need to find a poster with a photograph you just love!

Next, measure the picture and find an old window that will fit around your poster. (Look on eBay or Amazon for a frame--or see the ones I found below!)

This Old House Reader Leslie Geesaman's clever re-use of a salvaged window will inspire you to try this easy way to display art and photos. Here is a link to those instructions on how to make a window sash frame: click Make A Window-Sash Frame.

Click Let in a breath of fresh air! to purchase the open window shown here at allposters.com. No need to build a window sash frame for this view.

Window Sash? What is that?

A sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or "sashes" that form a frame to hold panes of glass,

Use Salvaged Wood For Your Frame

Customize a frame for your landscape poster.

Use old wood salvaged from homes. For this design project you should be thinking: wood from floors, bead board, crown molding, baseboards. Get the drift? There's an idea! You might even find some old wood at the beach that washed ashore. That kind of wood would be wonderful for a window with beach scene. I am just full of ideas today!

Old (or new) Windows to create your framed view:

If you have a "Habitat For Humanity" store in your city, you might be able to find old window frames or the molding to make a frame for your poster or glicee. Of course there is always a home supply or hardware store you can search as well. Maybe garage sales might have old windows, but that is very time consuming. I have rarely seen garage sale ads that tell you they have old windows or molding because Ads in the newspapers cost too much to list what you have for sale item by item.

Don't forget Craig's List and use good judgment if you buy something. Take someone with you to pick it up and pay with cash.

What kind of window view would you like to make?

Sharing your home decor project.

Creating a window view is such an easy way to give any room a breath of freshness. Is this design project something you would try? What did you think of the "This Old House" project for making a frame from a window sash? That looked like a project that I could easily do myself. Of course, my husband will most likely take over. He would probably love to make a frame for my view. Did you see the other projects on that page that use architectural objects?

Please don't forget to give this page a thumbs up or share it on Facebook or Twitter! Thanks.
