Getting help for your business

Most small businesses need a helping hand

This is especially true when you consider that there are so many competitive options in the world today. There was a time when just having a web presence was a "big deal." Now, it is pretty much standard procedure.

If every business today is expected to have a web presence, how can any one small business expect to stand out? How can any small business successfully compete in today's crowded marketplace? After all, a small business obviously lacks both the capital and the infrastructure of a major corporation.

Think about this - David beat Goliah. He did it despite the fact the odds were overwhelmingly against him. If you remember the Bible story, David was pretty cocky in his optimism. However, it is important to point out that David not only knew how to use his tools, he knew how to use the tools of his adversary, Goliah. In fact, he used Goliath's own weapons to defeat him.

Does that sort of thing still happen today? Well, two men decided to take on Wal-Mart. They formed a small business and began to compete against Wal-Mart on specific retail items by employing Wal-Mart's own strategy but without needing a box store. Believe it or not, this business that was started by two men is now beating Wal-Mart in segmented retail markets. The company's name is Alice.com. The size and massiveness of Wal-Mart did not deter those two men from taking it on.

If David and Alice.com can do it, is there not hope for any small business that knows how to use its tools? You just need what David and Alice.com had. You need to know how to cleverly user your own tools (and possibly the tools of the competition). How does that happen? You need to get organized and seek proper guidance. Don' t go it alone. The purpose of this lens is to three-fold:

1) To introduce you a tool for maintaining an organized business life

2) To suggest ways to successfully network

3) To encourage business mentorship and personal infrastructure building.

Let's get started.

Get yourself organized

With JibberJobber

The video you are about to see was created by Jason Alba, a software manager who lost his job. As you will see in the video, he created this career management program initially for himself. Why? Because neither a spreadsheet nor a CRM program were meeting his needs.Since he could not find what he needed, he decided to create it.

The reason I bring this software program to your attention is because it is not just a web-based program to help people find a job. It is the ideal program to help any individual or business not only stay organized, but build a three-fold infrastructure of support. That infrastrure includes - caring people, willing places and useful tools.

Here is a short video with guidelines on how to network. While the focus in the video appears to be networking to garner a job, the same also applies for getting more customers for a small business.

Linkedin's 2nd degree of separation power

Bring important people into your sphere of influence

Some people may think that what's important about Linkedin is all about what you yourself can accomplish - like large numbers of followers. But, if that is what you think, you are mistaken. Linkedin is not first-and-foremost about YOUR VALUE and about what YOUR VALUE can accomplish for you. Amazingly, it is what the VALUE of OTHER PEOPLE can accomplish FOR YOU.

Let me give you a real-life example that you can actually test. Let's say, for example, you needed to get in touch with Gov. Jerry Brown in Sacramento, CA. The last thing you would be thinking about is connecting on Linkedin with someone in South Florida...me. But, the truth is, if you were to connect with me, Lamar Morgan, on Linkedin, you would be just two degrees away from Gov. Jerry Brown. And, why is that? Because I am connected on Linkedin to Marty Keller, the Small Business Advocate for the State of California.

What you do to connect with Gov. Brown is to first connect with me via my Linkedin Group, Givers Gain. Once you have connected with me, you request I introduce you to Marty Keller. Should Marty Keller agree to connect with you as a result of my introduction, you can proceed to make a connection with Gov. Jerry Brown by making the request of Marty.

Do you need to become a "mover-and-shaker" in the business or political world? Use the second degree of separation on Linkedin to make that magic happen.

Get a business mentor

And, build a business infrastructure/safety net

Life is not just about you. It's about other people. Many of those "other people" can become a wonderful resource for both your personal life and your business life. Oftentimes, you cannot recognize all that you really need through your own knowledge and insight. You need a different point of view to maximize your own effectiveness.

Below are some examples of things a mentor with online expertise should be able to help you accomplish.
  • Give you guidance regarding the differences between traditional marketing (broadcasting) and social media marketing. They are not the same. Today, you need to know how to effectively optimize both for business success.
  • Ehance the Search Enginge Optimization appeal of your website. This should result in higher rankings on search engine sites and therefore entice more customer traffic to your business.
  • Every business needs a plan and a timetable by which to work that plan. It is always a good idea to have someone to which you are accountable for that plan. A business mentor is the ideal person not only to help you design the plan, but to function as an accountability partner.
  • True success is not an accident. It is an expectation. That expectation is the result of a good design. More often than not, that good design can be traced back to a business relationship with a mentor.

Small business success strategies

To build both a better career and a better life

The biggest mistake any small business can make is to go it alone - especially in today's recessionary economic climate. If there ever was a motto that fit these times, it has to be "better together." Just look at the titles of all the books and you will see there is indeed a common thread of seeking community involvement and support.
