Order Out of Chaos - How I Escaped Becoming A Hoarder
Ranked #653 in Healthy Living, #13,131 overall
How Could This Happen To Me? I Am Not a Hoarder...Am I?
How can Organization go so wrong? How can collecting become so destructive? A frank look into how I became a hoarder.
As you can tell from my Bio, I am a registered nurse. That in itself should explain I am extremely well organized, I can prioritize patient needs in a heart beat. I can accomplish more in an eight hour shift that most other people or even professions. I know how to dot my i's and cross my T's . I know how to keep my ducks in a row. I am also a wife and homemaker, both requiring organization skills.
So what is this lens all about? What am I trying to say?
Well it all started when my husband and I got married (1986) and we bought our first home. And that is when I started my secret life of hoarding. There I said it... I'm out... these are the facts as I know them.

If You Don't Know What To Do With It... Put It In The Basement

I love my home. My husband and I were so thrilled when it was being built, our first home and it has turned out to be our only home. We have lived here for 25 years. It has been perfect.
Well, not perfect...close...but not quite.
There are not enough closets!!! There is no storage space.
Where is a person supposed to keep all the treasures they acquire over the years? Things you just had to have and you really couldn't afford but you had to by it or all would not have been right in your world. You know what I mean?
Well that is what happened to us. We accumulated... Stuff! And then we accumulated some more.
Clothes, books, games, crafts, yarn, electronics, puzzles, everything we loved.
"Collecting Unloved Objects" An interesting concept...
In Flagrante Collecto (Caught in the Act of Collecting)
This is the story of a professor who made collecting an art form. She even made the art beautiful with a thousand photos that she included in this hard cover book. She collected everything, she felt they were "finds". She said "collecting is a calling; and those who are driven to collect unloved objects are the purest collectors of all."
We all have our opinions on this subject but the presentation by this woman that loved her collecting is truly enjoyable and insightful.

Collecting All Kinds of Useless "Stuff", Just Because It Was Cheap??
Garage Sales Are A Good Thing...Right?

And oh yes, Garage Sales, Real Treasures! And inexpensive so you can buy more! Heaven, oh yes, the jackpot!
Organization Gone Wrong
How Did This Happen?

So where did we go wrong?
First, I want you to know my home is beautiful. It is clean and always has been. I am well organized and I can tell you where everything is and everything is in its place. I am not a slob!
But don't go into my basement!
All of us have kept things in hopes of "getting to it" someday, newspapers, old magazines we want to read when we have time. A favorite shirt or dress we might fit into again someday.
So how do we differentiate between "collecting" or being a "harmless pack rat" and actually being a hoarder?
When it is interfering with your life, your job, and your relationships.

It's Easy To Stop Feeling Organized, You Simple Run Out of Places to Put Stuff
You Begin To Feel Out of Control

Whenever Jim and I would come home with one of our new treasures, we inevitably cherished it for awhile. It was a part of our home, we looked at it. We marveled at our good fortune. We masters of the universe.
Then something happened. We realized it really didn't fit. We didn't really have a huge need for it. It was in the way. What were we to do? You can't just throw it away. We spent good money on this treasure that may now be a bit tarnished, but still in all, a treasure. Besides, maybe we don't want it underfoot today, but what about some day, what if we find we need it and then we don't have it anymore. Oh how could we face that?
Okay...Put it in the basement.
Uncontrolled Collecting Was About To Do Me In
Put it in the Basement

Yep! Put it in the basement may become inscribed on my tombstone.
Here lies Susan Kaul, She didn't need a burial, we just put her in the basement.
Crass I know, but I am making a point. Everything we didn't know what to do with simply found its way to the basement. And after years of accumulating the basement became full. And after years of this behavior I long ago gave up trying to keep it clean or organized. I was completely overwhelmed. It just kept growing into a monster. A nightmare.
It was so full and unbelievably out of control that it was to the point that torching it seemed feasible. At the end I had one small path that led to the washer and dryer and the rest of the basement was unusable.
It was ridiculous. How could I have let this happen? And now that it was a reality no matter how disgusting, what was I to do?
I Must Be A Hoarder
I saw that show about hoarders on television. It was like instant therapy for me. I had a title for my problem.
I was sick to my stomach. Oh My God, I Must Be A Hoarder!
Organization Is Essential, But recognizing You Need it Comes First
Well Something Had To Change. And My Attitude Was Going To Be First
I couldn't be more motivated. I wanted to resolve the problem and in a hurry. But How?
I was overwhelmed, I couldn't even get into the basement. What should I do first?
Then a dear friend of mine told me, Nobody can eat an elephant in one bite. But you CAN eat an elephant one bite at a time. In other words JUST GET STARTED! Do something, anything! Just get started!
So April 2010 was the start of the solution to my having become a hoarder.
Organization Began With Brutal De-Cluttering, and Then Putting Like Things Together for Further Examination
Another Look At the Nightmare. Soon to Be Gone

This is stuff pulled out of all the corners and closets and gone through. What to keep, what to throw out, what to sell...you get the point.
Compulsive hoarding affects all aspects of life.
Work, family and Social.
There is also a strong link to depression.
There is Help for Hoarding. You can help yourself get back to organization.
Learn about what makes you tick
This book offers a scientifically-based program to effectively help compulsive hoarders to dig their way out of the clutter and chaos they have become used to. It also helps to identify the reasons you feel the need to accumulate, acquire, collect, and hoard things you really do not need, but you think you must have. BR>

A Closet That Hadn't Seen Organization in Years!
One of the two walk in closets in the basement.

This is my husband's closet. It's not even his fault!! It was just another place to put stuff. I was running out of places to cram full. It was really horrifying.

Hoarding - Buried Alive
So What is Your Opinion About Collecting, Hoarding and Organization.
Can you innocently become a hoarder?
Dictionary.com gives this definition for hoarding
"to accumulate for preservation, future use, etc., in a hidden or carefully guarded place"
I'm sure I thought I was going to use absolutely everything in the basement at a later time. But some how it all got away from me. I do not have any mental illnesses, I'm not crazy, (I don't think), But it happened to me. Time, Energy, Overwhelmed, Desire, all played a part in it. It was almost like "out of sight, out of mind" I just wanted it to go away, but didn't seem to stop the behavior.
What do you think?
Is it possible to become a hoarder without even realizing it?

No, just use some restraint, You really may be crazy.
Pantherart says:
When I buy new the old gets tossed out, I can say I am not a hoarder.
Oh yes, it's way too easy to over accumulate without even knowing it and then WOW! where did all this stuff come from?
surfer1969 says:
Anyone can become a hoarder.
flycatcher says:
Oh yes, I think it can just sneak up on you. "What if I might need this someday?"
Rewards4life says:
I am a terrible hoarder I collect and find treasures everywhere and until recently rarely threw anything away. Hoarding starts as keeping things which might come in useful and ends up taking over your home.
readabooki says:
It is so easy to accumulate stuff you just have to constantly keep throwing away.
Lorraine says:
As a sub note to my last comment on hoarding, I do want to place an emphasis on the "emotional dimension of hoarding". I have found that getting counselling in order to investigate why I began hoarding has been very helpful. It has been my observation that all hoarding has a starting point, usually some life altering event or trauma, or sense of loss. Once a person understands and comes to terms with the beginning stages of their hoarding activities, they can usually make a lot of progress towards changing their habits. Some things in life that a lot of effort and time. They take discipline too, but the rewards as so wonderful. All the best to everyone who desires to change their habits and become happier.
Lorraine says:
I recently came to terms with the fact that I had become a hoarder. It all began when we went through loss, and then I needed to re-accumulate things we needed for survival. Once we were re-established, I just kept things and accumulated things. Now that I have come to terms with my hoarding, I got help and started clearing spaces and discarding things. I feel healthier and do not want to repeat the old habits of hoarding. My recommendation to those reading this is "do not bring things into your space if you do not want to hoard. If you do, you will become a prisoner again". Be free to live and enjoy life by not hoarding. All the best to everyone in this time of change.
fugeecat says:
yes, it is. you get things and you just start stuff in different places. I can see how it happens to people.
Organization At It's Brightest. Truly Joyful
The New Main Living Area in the New Clean Basement

I couldn't bring you this far without showing you the remarkable transformation that has occurred. This is now a very comfortable area that we enjoy coming to for relaxation and fun. We put together puzzles. Watch movies. Exercise and take naps in this room now. In the summer it is wonderful here because it is so cool, and in the winter it is wonderful for snuggling.

The old school of thought is that only those diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are chronic hoarders. But the new definition of hoarding includes significant clutter in the home. It is actually being considered a symptom of anxiety disorder.

Hoarders also tend to have trouble making decisions -- to throw it out or not? -- and so the clutter accumulates.
The CLEAN and Clutter Free Hallway From Upstairs down into the basement.
This is remarkable to me because this wasn't even passable. Really it used to be a fire hazard. And now look how clean it is.
Behind the curtain wall is my washer and dryer. Jim's tool area and the freezer.
At the far end, left is the new food pantry behind two bi fold doors. Huge and completely organized. And the closest left bi fold doors are covering the hot water heater and furnace/AC.
This is it!! My Coveted Beautifully Organized Crafts Closet
I have wanted something like this forever! Finally it's mine.
All that you see on this side are my scrapbooking items. I love to go into this closet and sit down and just look at everything. It is so fun to pick out a theme or what book I am currently scrapping and be able to figure out where I left off and continue on to completion. It is wonderful.

Scrapbooking Organization At Its Best
Organization makes it so easy to find and comeback to your current projects

Even the Little Things are Neatly Organized
Nothing gets lost, I can find it all!

Hoarders simply love to own things and more the better. Whether the objects are bought or gotten for free doesn't matter. All acquisitions are treasured. Usually the items have no real value, for instance a hoarder might have clippings from newspapers decades old and not associated with themselves or anyone they know but they can not part with them because they may be needed someday by someone someday.
A key reason hoarders give for keeping so many objects is "It has sentimental value"

- Hi again. Well, it is good to hear that the "project of cleaning your den" is being approached with a positive attitude, it always helps. Also, the reward system is a good one, and there is also a real sense of accomplishment, which goes a long way in making a "former" hoarders mood better. I suppose it is the idea of replacing bad habits with healthier ones. A form of exchange on the path to self improvement. Enjoy the project Nightbear !....and I am sure it will turn out to be beautiful, clean and organized :-)

- Hi Lorraine, yes the project of the den is underway. Not nearly as bad as the basement because it was already livable, unlike the disastrous basement. But I am shocked by how dirty things are and in disarray. You think you do a good job then you get lazy. This is my last project of this kind so I am kind of enjoying it. Glad to hear from you.

- I read somewhere recently that after you complete your organization of things,
whether it is clothing, household items or the pantry, then you need to reward yourself for your hard work. That could be something as simple as a nice bubble bath or a good cup of tea, but whatever the case, it should be something that values all the effort you are putting into the decluttering process. That reinforces the positive experience of making good choices !

- I completely agree, it is the ole' positive reinforcement. Rewarding good behavior. I try to live by this whenever possible and practical. Lorraine, I am currently involved in a new project of reorganizing and cleaning my Den. It is another nightmare that needed to be tackled. It is one of those rooms in my house that I could close a blind eye to because it is "clean" on the surface. But it is so full of junk and stuff that needs to be gone. This time however, I am enjoying the process. It is not the horror the basement was. So progress has been made all around. I thought you'd get a kick out of that.
