Creating a sitemap for your website is very important, on Squidoo, you can create a Lensography



A sitemap for your website is very, very important. You can automatically create an up to date sitemap in a number of different versions for all the main search engines. This does not work on Squidoo. For Squidoo, the alternative is to create a Lensography of all your Lenses and groups. Some methods are shown below. If you want, I can do this on a regular basis.

Creating a Sitemap, many different types, and all are important

It is possible to create a sitemap for all the different versions needed manually, using a text editor or html editor. The problem with this method, is that you need to do this every time you update a webpage, the reason, search engines use different sitemaps to recognise new pages and more importantly, when they were updated.

Types you need are in the format .html, .htm, .rss, .xml, .txt, .net and are always placed in the main directory of your website. Different search engines use different types of sitemaps, i.e. Google uses an .xml sitemap. Yahoo uses a .txt sitemap etc. I use 9 on my website, plus the robot.txt file. If you own a small website, with a few pages you can create all your sitemaps manually and update them when you change or add pages. If you have a larger or more sites there is a tool that creates all the sitemaps automatically. This should be done everytime you update the site.

Lensography is Squidoo's Sitemap

Creating a Lens, whose specific role is to list all of your Squidoo Lenses together, is called a Lensography on Squidoo. You can use text links or the "Featured Lens" module to create you list. This is a great method of increasing page ranking, and helps the search engines find all of your work.

You should then join the "Lensography of Lensographies" Lens, which list all Lensographies submitted by Squidoo members. Here are two Lens, the first explains and shows you how to create a Lensography and the second is the direct link for adding your new Lensography. Good Luck/
