Creating a sitemap for your website is important, on Squidoo create a Lensography

A sitemap for your website is very, very important. You can automatically create an up to date sitemap in a number of different versions for all the main search engines. This does not work on Squidoo. For Squidoo, the alternative is to create a Lensography of all your Lenses and groups. Some methods are shown below. If you want, I can do this on a regular timescale.

A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site.

While some developers argue that site index is a more appropriately used term to relay page function, web visitors are used to seeing each term and generally associate both as one and the same. However, a site index is often used to mean an A-Z index that provides access to particular content, while a site map provides a general top-down view of the overall site contents.

Creating a Sitemap, 5 different types, and all are important

It is possible to create a sitemap for all the different versions needed manually, using a text editor or html editor. The problem with this method, is that you need to do this every time you update a webpage, the reason, search engines use different sitemaps to recognise new pages and more importantly, when they were updated.

Types you need are in the format .html, .rss, .xml, .txt, .net and are always placed in the main directory of your website. Different search engines use different types of sitemaps, i.e. Google uses an .xml sitemap. Yahoo uses a .txt sitemap etc.

This is fairly easy to create and update with new pages.

If all this has left you totally confused, here is a great solution

If you own a small website, with a few pages you can create all your sitemaps manually and update them when you change or add pages. If you have a larger or more sites there is a tool that creates all the sitemaps automatically.

I wrote this Lens to help people understand how useful sitemaps are, either on the web or in Squidoo.

I earn a referral fee from the software tool I am recommending, which you can try for free. I believe once you have seen how simple it is to use and the great customer support, you will vote this Lens with 5 stars. Free sitemap creator Download Sitemap

How to create a Lensography

Creating a sitemap in Squidoo is different. The method I use, is to create a Lensography Lens, and then add it to the Lensography group. It is then easy to create a link from your website to the Lensography Lens.
