Creating your own Website - Files and FTP
Ranked #4,042 in Internet, #222,044 overall
Wordpress is your best friend!
By now you have a domain name and hosting account and are ready to start creating your masterpiece. What to do now? My hearty recommendation is to install Wordpress. I have used a lot of website platforms (OS Commerce, Joomla etc) over the years, but especially for a beginner, I couldn't recommend an easier way to get your site looking fantastic with ease.
There is a whole internet community of people who add new templates and new modules enabling you to do funky stuff regularly, so Wordpress can keep providing you with what you need as your website evolves and grows. Wordpress is probably the most popular website platform available today, and the best news is that it's free!
Most hosting providers offer you a free service to install wordpress on your domain. For a first time website builder, I definately recommend you take them up on it. Just look for the link or ad and they will take you through it, which should probably take 10 minutes or less. Bang! You're ready to start tinkering!
Tinkering (my very technical term) is the BEST thing you can do with your new website. At this point, you can't hurt it by doing something wrong, so click away and get to know your options, what does what etc. This is the best way to learn, and it's fun :) Wordpress is very hard to muck up anyway, but if you do you have the comfort of knowing that you aren't ruining any content or preferences, you can just reinstall if it all goes horribly wrong (which it won't).
Wordpress is very user friendly and you will be able to pick up the feel of it by tinkering, but if you'd like to get more into the nitty gritty of the variety of amazing things you can achieve with it, I've selected a few books to help you on your way.

FTP - What?
I want to give you a good piece of advice and tell you to get an FTP Program. What is FTP I hear you ask? It stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP programs are basically little programs that you install on your computer and (after you've configured it of course) will open up a split window on your screen that displays files on your computer on one side, and files in your website on the other. Getting familiar with an FTP program is a must if you are going to be serious about your website.Wordpress does have a facility to add files and edit your files within your admin area, but you can only use this for a few files at a time, which is very time consuming, not to mention risky if you're doing something important and your browser freezes! An FTP program will enable you to upload and edit multiple files straight from your computer to your site, by using a very simple drag and drop function.
Using an FTP program is invaluable for me when I'm using a new platform as it enables me to quickly get a grasp on the inner file structure,
which is obviously a good thing to have - the more you learn about how your website works, the easier it is to use and modify to your liking, as well as troublshoot if anything goes wrong. It also takes the stress out of modifying your files, because you simply save a copy of your master file onto your computer, upload your modified one, and if it doesn't produce your desired result on your site, with 2 clicks of a button you have your old file back online and everything's fine again. I can't tell you how many times I have experimented with a file and ruined the display of the whole site! Having a backed up file 2 clicks away has often saved me from a near heart attack. Phew!
