Bucket Lists

The movie "The Bucket List" made many start to think about what they would put on their own bucket list if they were to create one. This lens explores some possible ideas for your list.

A Bucket List

A couple of years ago, a movie came out with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. They were two men who met in a hospital where they were both patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. Having been given only six months to live, they created a bucket list, a list of the things they wanted to accomplish before they died. In the beginning of the movie, they were antagonistic to each other, but as the story progresses, they become good friends and realize that, despite their differences, they really had some of the same desires in life. One of the best quotes in the movie comes from Morgan Freeman's character: "You measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you,"

The movie is not a movie about dying, but about how we live. It's about how we impact other people's lives. And it's about not putting off those things that we really want to do in life.

So what's on your bucket list? I have started a list of possible things to pick from for a bucket list and hope others will add to it!

Plant a vegetable garden
Make a will

Grow an herb garden
Go to a play at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC
Attend a concert at Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado

Places to See

What about those places you've always wanted to visit and just never got around to it? Here are a few to think about in the United States:

The Grand Canyon
The Royal Gorge
The Pacific Coast Highway
The Alamo
The Vietnam Wall
The Smithsonian Museums
See Congress in Session
Visit Yellowstone
Take a roadtrip without a plan

What about those places outside of the US that you would want to see? Here are a few that might be on my list:

Paris, France: Been there once and would love to return some day
London
Dublin, Ireland
Australia
The Greek Isles
See Niagara Falls

Learn Something New

How about that thing that you always wished you knew how to do? No time like the present to put that on your list and make a plan to learn!

Sign Language
How to make Candles: This one is definitely on my list!
A foreign language
Learn to Dance
Take a public speaking course
Learn to bake bread
Read a book by an author that you've never heard of

It's never too late to learn those things that you always though about and just never got around to doing!

New Experiences!

What about those things that you always wanted to try but either didn't have the courage or just "never got around to it"? How about adding some of those to your bucket list?

Go skydiving
Snorkel on a coral reef
Swim with the turtles in the Caribbean Sea
Ride a jetski
Swim with dolphins
See the Grand Canyon, from a helicopter
Ride a motorcycle
Ride a hot air balloon

Things that make a difference

I love the idea of random acts of kindness. One of my standards surrounds toll booths. It's exciting for me to see a toll booth coming ahead as I know it means i get to give someone else a small smile for the day. I always pay for the car behind me. It isn't much, but it's a way to give something back to someone and make their day a bit brighter. What things can you think of that make a difference?

Make a difference in the life of a child
Make a difference in the life of a demployed military person
Make a difference in the life of an elderly person
Make a difference for an abandoned animal
Forgive someone
Tell someone they are awesome and why
Thank someone who impacted your life
Start a gratitude journal: Write five things every day that you are thankful for; you'll be surprised at how it changes your outlook!
Mentor a newbie, in some you do personally or professionally
Support a charity

One of my favorite quotes comes from Anne Frank:
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."

You can start today!
Important!

Although time seems to fly by, it never travels faster than one day at a time. Each day is a opportunity to live your life to the fullest

Track it!

Once you've created your list, keep track of it. Mark off things as you get them done. You will be surprised at how writing that list makes a commitment to actually doing it.
