Playing with Collage Art

Making collage art is simple to do and a fun way to express yourself. No art lessons? No problem. No special supplies are needed either, just some time to let your imagination and creativity out to play.

Collage artists use many additional techniques for unique and creative altered art that you might certainly enjoy. This page shows a few examples of very simple collage art that ANY person can do before ever learning about particular collage artist techniques or investing in any supplies.

Just start collecting pictures and words or lettering from magazines or other printed media to make some simple collage art. Glue, paper, scissors, some old magazines and ==> ready, set...GO!

Scrapbooking to Collage Art

Collage is fun and simple... no rules nor expensive supplies needed.

collageWhile I enjoyed scrapbooking for a time years ago, I have limited experience with collage art. Somewhere in the chaos of boxes from a recent move are my scrapbooking supplies. I haven't dug them from the abyss yet, but did find a few items ... like my picture files and a collection of alphabet rubber stamps which I used in collage #3 below.

So recently I started a collage as a creative goal-setting project ... and WOW! Several fun collage art pieces were created in that process. You see...I have saved files of pictures from magazines for years, so I already had a treasure chest of goodies. So one day I pulled them all out and created several collages, just for fun... ergo the following collages - created by moi.

Now a collage piece might never feel complete or finished to the artist... I am sure to add to them as I find just the right image to add or think of another idea that 'belongs' there. So maybe you'd enjoy helping out with the captions contests below. I've only added a couple of captions to each one so far and would be THRILLED to find more, so feel free to add your own and ENJOY!

Welcome to my collage studio!

collage

This is the very first page of my art journal, LOVE that photograph and just added a few words, and the welcome mat by Mary Englebreit. I once had one of her calendars and saved it, in fact I rarely throw away old calendars since I enjoy the images and they are great to use for art or inspiration.

My Dream Home

collage

This is just one of my many images of a 'dream home' - certainly a favorite, LOVE the architecture of this house! The design seems to wrap itself around in a welcoming way, and includes all those arches (LOVE them!) and the adobe and clay tile roof is just my style... and the pool? not too shabby either, eh? All of my dream homes are near water of some sort; lake, river, beach or a pool, or both (best).

Collage #3
My Art Studio

collage

Only once did I actually have an art studio, and it was in the basement of a house where I used to live. I painted a corner all sorts of funky colors from leftover paint in wild ways with a huge sun on one wall and a spiral shape on the floor (concrete) and sponge paint designs everywhere ...what FUN! Surely the new owner thinks I'm an eccentric nut case! (proud smiles)
However it was in the basement and I rarely spent much time down in that cold dark place - but it was a great place to keep my art supplies and whimsical goodies. For me a working studio would need to have windows and sunshine peering in, similar to my vision of SARK's magic cottage.

Collage #4
Colorful Strips

This kind of collage is simple and fun. You might recognize it from the intro photo above, where I just added the lettering for the lens title.
To make a similar collage: Start out with two full page size photos that you like, preferably similar in some way... colors or theme or ... ? Then cut or tear the images into strips (mine are vertical, could also do horizontal strips) and then glue the pieces down alternating those from one image to the other. Then if you like you can glue some other image on top (colorful lizards above) and - done! Unless...of course you think of other fun stuff to add.

Transformation

The photo itself is stunning. I saved it from a newspaper article about depression maybe 10 years ago, the photographer's signature is visible at bottom right. Then I added the words and the cocoon shape/lady/butterfly - that took forever as I pieced it together from another cut out.

This pic is the one that started it all, for it will eventually become my Mandala Collage, that's the goal-setting project that I'm working on right now. That is me in the photo...younger and thinner :-) taken about 10 years ago in Mexico.

See the mandala collage project for goal-setting.

I remember working on collage art with our daughter when she needed that project due the next day even though she was told about it a few days before. This type of art is always fun to make.

Journal Bliss by VIOLETTE

Journal Bliss: Creative Prompts to Unleash Your Inner Eccentric

Amazon Price: $2.00 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

I was so inspired by this book, I happily worked on my art journal non-stop for HOURS! There are a lot of journaling how-to books available, but this book by Violette stands out above and beyond them. Violette offers such unique, wonderful, whimsical and engaging artwork along with prompts, tips and creative techniques to get you started on creating your own art journals. It's impossible to flip through it and not be inspired by the unique imagery. But there's even more here to be inspired by than just the artwork... Violette models several techniques starting with silencing your inner critic and then moves into creating groovy backgrounds, image transfers and fanciful lettering as well as doodling and bodacious borders. I HIGHLY recommend this book! It's a must have for anyone interested in collage and art journaling - a refreshingly delightful collection of user-friendly techniques and engaging text. Artful inspiration awaits on every page.
