You Won't Win A Costume Contest In A Ready-Made Costume

Halloween fanatics will tell you - you just can't win a Halloween Costume Contest with a store-bought costume!

Oh, you can try. And you'll probably still have fun.

But let's face it - half the fun of Halloween is seeing just how far you can go with a costume.

Just how creepy or scary or disgusting can you get? Go ahead and pick up a costume at the store if you want, but don't even bother entering the contest.

And creative homemade Halloween costumes don't have to be expensive or time consuming to put together. Two of our all-time favorites used simple household objects:

The 'Cereal' Killer: Dress in your rattiest sweatshirt and jean and use hot glue to cover your clothing with a dozen or so of those single-serving boxes of cereal. And then stick knives in the boxes and liberally sprinkle yourself with blood.

Wad of Gum: Dress in a bright pink pair of pajamas and wear a matching hat and something to cover your shoes so you're pink from head to toe. Then attack a light-weight child's chair to your hat and wear it on your head. You're a wad of gum stuck under the chair!

Halloween is the time of year when your imagination runs wild. You picture demons and devil dogs behind every tree and witches and vampires in every mirror. Turn your imagination inward this year and come up with an award-winning creative homemade Halloween Costume!

Who knows? You might win the contest?

Winged Demon Halloween Costume

Steve created this homemade Halloween costume the he pulled from the dark, hidden corners of his nightmares.

This 7-foot tall Winged Demon costume has wings that actually open and close and running into this guy in a dark alley is NOT something you want to do.

The mask you see is a real hip bone from a cow that his dog dragged in from a neighboring farm one day. Take a close look at those glowing, red eyes, too. Steve put lights in the head and completed the look by molding some jaws using Play-Do.

Regan from 'The Exorcist'

The Exorcist is still one of the scariest horror movies ever made. And looking at this costume it's easy to see why!

Everything about this Exorcist Halloween costume is homemade.

Christine started with a cheap thrift-store nightgown and then let the Devil take over her creation.

The pea-soup vomit is made from lime green fabric paint, glue and baby powder. She mixed it all together and then just started painting.

All the wounds are made using tissue and liquid latex and she picked up a pair of demonic-looking contact lenses to really add to the effect.

But the real killer is the bed! Christine made the bed out of cardboard and wrapped it in sheets, just like the bed in the movie. The pillow is stapled to the bed and the whole thing is strapped to her body and covered up with a blanket.

This costume is so realistic and so closely resembles the movie that it creeps me out to even look at the picture!

Queen Of Blades

Tegan made this Queen of Blades costume with her own, two little... erm...hands?

The Queen of Blades is from the video game Starcraft II and she looks pretty freakin' creepy!

Tegan started with a body suit and then cut and shaped craft foam for the gloves, boots and body armor. The foam is all hot glued to the suit and then painted with acrylic paint.

She made the wings from coat hangers wrapped in more craft foam and they're attached to a harness hidden under the suit.

The wig is a standard 'Dreads' wig which she modified by adding more beads, additional hair pieces and even more craft foam.

The whole creation has a creepy effect! If this is what all the character in that game look like....
