Creative Movement For Preschool Children

I've Been Working on the Railroad:

Preschool creative movement activities can use kids' music or be used with no kids music. For this creative movement activity you can play the song 'I've Been Working On The Railroad" in the background.

Questions for the Children:

You could ask various questions like:

1.) What do trains move like when they are going slow

2.)What do trains move like when they are going very fast

3.) What does a train move like when it is moving very heavy loads

4.) What does the train move like while going uphills or downhills

5.) What the train workers on the ground move like

etc.

While the song is playing you can let the kids move around as they feel, interpreting the song in their own unique way.

Some preschoolers and toddlers will be moving like they are 'working on a railroad', others may pretend they are driving or operating the train or locomotive, blowing whistles and driving around the classroom.

Other preschoolers may just simply move to the music and express themselves in their own unique way.

While you simply want the children to move and express themselves, you can also give instructions out to the children about every 5-10 minutes such as "Move like a Train", or "Pretend your working on the train" depending on how interested the children are with the song.

*Simple props can be used or made available to encourage the children to move like, streamers, engineers cap etc..

Preschool Creative Movements Using 'No' Music:

Child movement activities DO NOT have to be used with music. There are great gross motor activities and ideas for creative movement exercises which work fantastic with no music.

For a great child movement activity you could simply tell children to pretend they are "A Plant Growing".

You could ask questions such as:

1.) How does a growing plant move?

2.) How does a plant move if it is windy?

3.) What do you think a plant does when it gets watered?

4.)What do you think a plant does when the sun shines on it?

5.) What do you think a growing flower does a night?

Asking simple questions like these above gets the preschoolers and young children to think and express themselves through these preschool creative movement activities.

4.) Move like a farmer on a farm would move while doing his job

5.) Milk a cow

6.) Shovel bails of hay etc.

Here is another fun creative movement activity for the preschool children in your care. Most children LOVE dinosaurs. They love pictures of dinosaurs, they love books on dinosaurs, they love movies & cartoons with dinosaurs.

Why not incorporate dinosaurs into your creative movement ideas for the children in your care?

Dinosaur Creative Movement Idea:

For circle time or small group activty you can read a good descriptive kids book that talks about dinosaurs and how they move & how they acted in the dinosaur world.

When finished you could have music playing in the back ground and have the preschoolers & young children move around as dinosaurs.

The children could use a prop like a dinosaur hat while they pretend to be a dinosaur.

As the preschool teacher, you could hold up various pictures of different dinosaurs to give the children ideas of differerent dinosaurs they 'may' want to move or act like.

You could even ask questions like; "How does a T-Rex move?", "How does a Brontosaurus move?" etc..

Just let the preschool children move as they feel the dinosaurs would move. The kids will love it and have fun while learning & being physically active using their gross motor muscles.
