Creative Play with Peg Boards: A Parent's Review
Ranked #906 in Parenting & Kids, #30,354 overall
Never Bored Girls or Boys with Pegboards!
Today's pegboards come with pegs in different sizes and with convenient cases they can be stored in! I'm so sorry that I don't own my old pegboard any more to show you the difference!
Still, when we entered toy store, this was a toy my almost 3 year old picked for herself. And she's been playing with it a little bit each day. She even learned how to secure the case herself. Let me show you today's pegboards
Things Parents and Kids Love about Pegboards
At least some of them!
There are several excellent things about pegboards:1. Kids develop fine motor skills. Let's face it: it's pretty hard for 2,5 - 3 year old to put a peg into a board. But they keep trying until they do. Don't expect their first creations to be masterpieces. But that brings us to:
2. No end to creativity! What my girl did first time she picked up pegs was this: she picked 2 big pegs and one smaller and pretended they are mom, dad and herself. Well, I never have thought pegs could be used for pretend play, but what do I know! ;)
3. Portability - you can put pegs into a case that comes with it and your toddler can carry it around. It also makes this toy excellent choice for a travel toy - it's lightweight and easy for little ones to carry around.
4. No noise! Yay! This is toy that is played in silence! It doesn't run on batteries, most of kids don't even make a sound while they are busy playing!
5. With older kids it can be a great way to practice spatial skills using pegboards for creating and following patterns. I even used it for my almost 3 year old for some simple patterns - one small red, one big blue, one small red, what's next? She can follow this and interact with me.
I should warn you: Warning on this toy says 4+, but with parental supervision, 30-36 months old toddlers can use it without much trouble. Still, it holds small parts so you shouldn't leave your toddlers without supervision around this toy!
Other ideas for using pegboards...
This list will be updated over time as me and my little girl find a new ways to play and learn with this toy. Many of these ideas will be great for toddler and preschool age kids.1. What we have been doing with pegboards is: learning colors and developing fine motor skills!
Use a couple of small cups and a spoon - ask your toddler to divide pegs by color using spoon. You can start by adding a single peg to each cut to show where each color should go!
2. Learning letters. Use pegs and bands to create outline for a letter and let your child complete it. I have added sample picture on the right for letter P. You can do this with all letters. Few Images of Pegboard Creations
Might give you some ideas how to use pegboard
You can teach your kids letters and numbers with the pegboard! Just create one letter and let them duplicate it next to your own!

- I had a light-bright growing up. Loved it. My son had one too, and he loved his. Although they are not called a peg board, I believe them to be very similar.

- My daughter loved playing with her pegboard! She grew up to be an artist and her artistic talent was obvious from an early age. She would make quite elaborate designs on her pegboard :), so for children who enjoy creating designs, the pegboard can be used well past toddlerhood!
