Wow! Very impressive. I quite agree that the more experience the average person has in a specific area, the more likely they are to assume similar considerations apply when a problem pops up requiring a novel approach.

Creative thinkers respect the routine when applicable, but when it's not enough they then imagine things in terms of "what if?". Most aptitude tests do little to recognize creativity, and typically focus more on the speed with which a person answers standardized problems.

Imaginative brain stormers are good at making loose associations and using "fuzzy logic". They realize good ideas can come from any source and have a welcoming mind-set to different ways of looking at things. Everyone can do this, but too many people have a natural resistance to change at first.

Great content! I have been a professional creative all my life and I think it's funny to see the techniques I have always used, without thinking, spelled out so methodically. No doubt, being forced to find novel approaches to projects, time and again has allowed me to hone my creativity, as a skill set. I teach art to college students and I find a regular and widespread inability to think laterally. I think standardized testing restricts students to prescribed answers and linear processes that discourage original thinking. It is a learned behavior and very difficult to unlearn.

Great lens. Students will find this a useful stepping stone into Creativity.
  • Chris-H Sep 17, 2011 @ 8:47 am | delete
I really appreciate how you've collected all of these resources and methods in one place.

I keep a number of puzzles in my computer bag as a reminder that there is a solution to every problem even though it may not be obvious with the thinking with which I begin my approach.

    Blessed! :)

    Hi,
And thank you for all this material. Are you familiar with the idea of "clustering" and would this be a good substitute for mindmapping? Anything you can share would be appreciated. Thank you.

Great list of ways to launch and nurture creativity. Thanks for gathering so much info on a single lens. Of all the techniques listed, playfulness has been the most fruitful for me.

What a creative lens...LOL! I really enjoyed all the ideas you shared. Thanks.
  • Blonde_Blythe Nov 3, 2010 @ 9:19 am | delete
Your lens really got me to thinking. Following the tips in your lens promotes an open mind and is very helpful for those of us who get stuck in a rut doing things the same way day after day, after day. This lens applies not only to creativity, it applies to life! :)

This is a great resource lens. I have used many of these techniques before my retirement 4 years ago and they work wonders. I used many in group sessions with my team too. I had never thought of using the same techniques with my Squidoo lenses and my Zazzle designs but now that you've refreshed my memory I think that is a great idea. Thanks for a great lens. Blessed by a SquidAngel

Marelisa, this is an amazing lens. Very detailed write up on the different techniques. I found SCAMPER particularly helpful - this is the first time I'm reading about it so thank you for that. To the readers who are interested in mindmapping, check out source forge - http://freemind.sourceforge.net. It's an open-source mindmapping software I use and highly recommend. Very user-friendly.

Anyone who is interested in brainstorming techniques can take a read at: http://celestinechua.com/blog/2009/02/25-brainstorming-techniques/. There are 25 effective brainstorming techniques you can use for virtually any situation.

Probably the most important thing that I do (and you discussed) is brain storming. I keep a notebook or voice recorder near me (and if not, my cellphone can take notes) so if something pops up, I just jot it down. I have hundreds of future articles saved on my pc or in paper just waiting for me to have time to do all of them.
  • Shirishb Mar 15, 2010 @ 7:03 pm | delete
Hi Merelisa, That is a great lens. I start reading at top and continued till end. Sometime we do stop in between and click on links and divert our mind. Yes both ways it is good, focusing on a subject and lateral thinking. What matters is organizing mind in clear and positive thoughts. What my guru Parma Pujya Sudhanshuji Maharaj says?
  • dezwards Mar 9, 2010 @ 3:25 pm | delete
A super lens full of excellent information. Great creative techniques and written in an easily readable way! Many thanks, really enjoyable and useful.
