Creative Toys

Children need a creative outlet, just as adults. Creative toys and craft projects give them an opportunity to use their imaginations and creativity. I think the solution is one of balance - children need to run and play and jump outside. They also need to enjoy creative activities, and yes, be exposed to our growing technological world.

It is up to us as adults to see that their worlds are balanced. Here are a few of my favorite creative toys - and the ones our grands enjoy the most!

The Art Corner

In our house, the art corner is a coffee table that is pushed up against the wall. In the grandchildren's home, their sweet mama has converted the breakfast room into an art room. They are free to create at any time.

Here is how I organized the table at our house:
I save leftover printing paper -- the children create on my recycled computer paper. The table is filled with stickers, markers, a big basket of crayons, children's scissors, tiny staplers, paper plates, and sometimes even left-over crepe paper. Anytime I see anything they might use, I just add it to the table. Our granddaughter particularly loves to create with egg cartons!

PixOs from Amazon

At 5 and 6 years old, our grandchildren are delighted with PixOs. This is one of the cutest toys I have ever seen! I understand that at one point the toy was removed from the market because of safety issues, but thankfully, PixOs are now considered safe and back on the market. It is important to mention here that their mother is always close by our grandchildren when they are creating.

Playdough

We love playdough! The grandchildren like to create "food" to cook in my tiny iron stove-- and the kitchen bar is a perfect spot for that creativity!

I love to color with children and when the crayons get all broken, I love to melt them to make greeting cards.

I've seen those Pixos on TV, my boys were even asking for them when they were 9 and 12. I have to admit I even wanted to try them out, lets face it toys are still fun as adults!

Cool - I'm not familiar with Pixos - are they a new thing? Maybe they're just not available in Canada. Of course I recognize the play-doh - that was one of favorite things to play with as a child and was my son's favorit too but now he's into his Nintendo DS and his Wii.

oh yes, the grands would love those wooden toys. they were old carpenter pieces. Bet they would not pass safety regs now, tho! have not seen them in years! it was a huge bag. I bought those for your kids and also for neighbors and for ours! would like to have again!

Great ideas for the Creative Corner. I always have paper, markers, glue, etc. for my grandson and he loves to create things. He is 9 yrs old but will still pull out the big box of building blocks and create. Remember those bags of wooden parts that you gave the kids about 25 years ago? Now our grandson is enjoying them. I wonder if you can still get them. That was so neat.

Get em off the x-boxes and TV for sure. The WII is awesome w/hand/eye coordination and some are good exercise. Mostly we were playing some kind of sports as kids all the time, when not hunting or fishing. Of course you got to remember the big difference between now and then... we had no TV! Like your creative corner. Think I'll set one up for the grand kids.
