Writing Prompts for High School Creative Writing
Creative writing prompts are the ideal way to get high school students writing creatively, because they offer a direction to go in and a goal to aim for, which is essential for high school students. A prompt, rather than an assignment, offers the freedom necessary to produce good creative writing without paralysing the writer with indecision over what they're going to write about.
Prompts can also push boundaries for high school students, which is what they need to begin to develop their creative writing skills in a natural way. The prompts on this page are all free to use, print and distribute whatever way you like (as long as any on-web use is credited).

Use this table to prompt short creative pieces. Take each word as a theme, or just a spark to get your students started. It doesn't matter, as long as you write something!

6 Creative Writing Ideas For High School
- 1Spend five minutes writing down whatever comes into your head. Just keep the writing flow going as smoothly and uninterruptedly as possible. Once the five minutes is up, try identifying the theme of your writing and develop it into a coherent piece.
- 2Write a story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less. Then cut the story down to 50 words. Can you do it in 25? 6?
- 3Write a scene in dialogue-only first, then go back and fill in the action - but only where it's necessary to understand what's going on.
- 4Write a short creative piece using the word of the day as a prompt, and include the word in the story.
- 5Write the first sentence of a story today. Write the second sentence tomorrow. Continue until you've finished the story. Don't cheat, you can always edit later.
- 6Write about your day from the point of view of your shoes. Then write about it again from the point of view of your hair. Notice the difference?

'What if' High School Creative Writing Prompts
Use these prompts to encourage students to change key parts of classic tales - get them to re-write a scene, write out a theory of what would have happened, or re-write the whole story!
- What if the Beast hadn't transformed back into a man at the end of Beauty and the Beast?
- What if the sea witch had taken something else from The Little Mermaid, instead of her voice?
- What if Boromir hadn't died in The Lord of the Rings?
- What if your favourite hero had been the villain?

- What if your favourite story was told from a different point of view?

- I love writing prompts, especially during NaNoWriMo. In 6th Form we used to take prompts from our library books instead of concentrate on our homework. We made someone pick a page number and then a 'paragraph number', and then whomever had the book would pick the most interesting sentence for us to interpret.
It would be brilliant if this form of creative writing was introduced in schools. I imagine a lot more students would enjoy sinking their teeth into short stories.
