Creative writing comes from a prompt of some kind. All you need is a little help.

Creative Writing Challenges

Many people think that creative writing is as easy as sitting down with pen and paper or at a computer and just letting the words flow. Yes, it can be that easy sometimes, but not all the time. Writers struggle to find the right words at times and even to come up with topics.

Just sitting down to a computer does not always produce stellar material. Most writer's need prompts to get them going. It could be a memory. It could be a scent. It could be a picture.

Creative writing can be challenging at times. Try looking at a picture to get ideas. Here is my way of helping you. Look at the picture featured in this article. What writing prompts can you come up with? Here are a few I've come up with along with the help of some friends. You can use them, variations of them, or come up with others on your own.

Using a Picture

for writing prompts

Look at this picture. It is a work of art depicting apples. Normally one would look at it and see apples. A writer sees the apples and more. This is where inspiration can be obtained. Writing topics and titles can be found within this one piece of art. Hard to believe?

An apple is not just a painting here. It is not just a fruit. It can be the subject of a best selling novel. How? Close your eyes. Let your mind clear itself. When you are completely blank, bring up the image of the apples or another image of an apple that you are more familiar with. It is important here that you don't limit yourself. Remind yourself that you are not limited by any laws of physics or society. Anything can go.

As you do this, you'll begin to see ways that a simple apple can be used to develop creative writing topics.

Forget the apple. Maybe it is the painting itself that becomes the topic of a story. Wow! A whole new dimension opened up. Maybe you could combine the apple and the painting. Maybe it is the painter. See how your mind can take a picture of apples and expand in all kinds of directions? That's the fun of creative writing.
