Draw-Paint-Create!

I worked for several years as an elementary after-school art specialist.  Over the years, I collected a large file of lessons, projects, and activities.  As a stay-at-home Mom, I don't currently teach classrooms of kids.  I sure do try with my 18-month daughter, but we're still on the "keeping-crayons-out-of-your-mouth stage".  I've created this lens to serve as a database of great art lessons for kids--complete with what I've learned works (and doesn't work) when actually teaching real children.

This lens is definitely a work in progress--so please check back often, as I will be adding new stuff as I have time.

Teaching with a Framework

I've found it important to have a coherent framework when teaching art when working with the same group for a number of lessons.

I have seen teachers successfully use as frameworks: Mediums (pencil, watercolor, pastel, etc.), Elements of Art, Artistic Principles, Famous Artists, and even Artistic Periods. The framework that I have found works best for me is "Elements of Art".

The Elements of Art are: Line, Shape, Color, Perspective, Value, and Texture. These simple elements are found in every artwork to some degree.

In the course of a year-long class, I would normally introduce all of the elements in the first lesson and then go on to flesh out each element in a couple-week period.

In this lens, there will be separate sections for each of these elements with corresponding lesson plans and links to Classical art that could be used to illustrate the specific element. (Please be patient with me while I get it all up and running!)

    About trpottery

A committed stay-at-home mother and potter, Tara Robertson creates her unique artwork in her home studio.  Her pottery is all hand-built, with vessels painstakingly formed from long coils or slabs of clay pinched together.  A single vessel can take days or months to complete.

Inspiration for Tara's work comes from an eclectic array of sources; her active little daughter, numerous houseplants, the hills around her house, friends' work at the lab where she is a teacher's assistant, and textured wall treatments.  Her new series reflect her willingness to push the clay in new directions and her love of whimsical shapes
