What Creativity Means

Creativity (and also innovation) is a way of thinking leading to the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts.

From a scientific point of view, the products of creative thought which are also referred to as divergent thinking have two important qualities -- originality and appropriateness. An alternative, more everyday conception of creativity is that it is simply the act of making something new. Although intuitively a simple phenomenon, creativity has not so far been completely understood by psychological research.

Creativity has sometimes been attributed variously to divine intervention as in the Greek idea of the Muses. It also has been described as a cognitive processes in which streams of thought are studied.

There is also a social aspect to creativity called the creative environment. Another way to look at creativity is as a personality trait. And sometimes creativity is looked at in terms of chance as in accident or serendipity.

When we think of creativity we often think of art and literature. Yet it is also an essential part of innovation and invention in fields and professions including business, economics, architecture, industrial design, science and engineering. Despite, or perhaps because of the ambiguous and multi-dimensional nature of creativity, many enterprises have been spawned from the pursuit of creative ideas and the development of creativity techniques. In a real sense however, creativity still remains a mystery.
